I turned the aircon on yesterday whilst I was stuck in traffic on the way home and it would only blow warm air:(, it was working a day or two ago quite well. is there anything simple to check on these?

the system I have is the underdash mounted unit on a td5

sounds like a worn seal or something and it dumped the gas...... needs to be run regularly even in winter to keep everything lubed.
But to answer your original question - sorry, i don't know what/how you can check - i'm just very glad mine still works in this humidity ;)

I have exactly the same problem but I'm aarid to get the air con guy to have a look.
I know its not the belt and pulleys I just had them replaced (they were STUFFED)

i can;t recall whether the lat time I had it gassed (after it rolled) whether they put any UV die in or not.

I had my top alloy pipe leak where it rubs near the top of the radiator. Was told you can't repair it so $1000 later in parts had to replace the lot due to all the rub marks through the system thats not including labour.Back working a treat now and all the contact areas have padding now so fingers crossed no more dramas.

i have a good aircon man here on the coast, he's based in tweed, but is mobile and very good at what he does,
anyone on the southern gold coast, pm me for his phone no. if you need aircon fixing.
he does my three 4wd's and a fellow members three cars and their company fleet, we can reccomend him.

I'll be home most weekends.

As I'll be doing the pre Xmas pack and clean up I'll open the gates for diagnostics for those who want pre xmas inspections.

thanks for the ideas i think it might wait a bit to get fixed, kinda run out of money after doing the clutch, gearbox and transfer case in the last few months.

Can you feel the clutch come in when you turn it on? Ive had some problems with mine but it was always like the themostat would not kick in (interior and exterior fans came on but blew unchilled air), though in the end it wasn't the thermostat it was the electrodiothingamee device. About $120 to replace.

In short if you can't feel the load of the compressor when you switch it on then there is a possiblity that the gas is safe in the system and you prob is electrical. If you feel the load and it's still warm then yes you have an aircon problem.

Cheers

The air-con compressor on my county rattled loose while off roading  I got it fixed back on and the guy checked the system for leaks, but the actual seal on the compressor was stuffed and not repairable :(

They quoted approx $900 for a new compressor, fittings and gas etc. It's still on the to do list 12 months later.

checked on the way home tonight, couldnt feel the load on the vehical, tried it a few times at the lights and heading up the Greenmount hill just to double check, and definately sounds more like an electrical problem now.
I will investigate a bit further now

Mine did similar - fortunately, I found the clutch assembly on the compressor had decided to detach and find itself on top of the motor wedged under plastic TD5 engine cowl. :oVery lucky did not destroy front of motor or radiator - sat up there for at least 2 days after I checked every other possibility.

Apparently after our last gulf trip on corrugated roads - loosed metal thread securing clutch. Just had to purchase new bolt and clutch washers from air conditioner technician. Suggest all check tightness and secure metal thread with appropriate locktite. Stupid design should be a lock nut.

Works a treat again.
