View Full Version : Removable winch mount

I finally finished my removable winch mount today. I initially looked at recreating the original RR winch kit but thought I could do a better job as far as approach angle and weight was concerned. My creation still attachs to the chassis exactly where the original RR kit would have and leaves the airbag crush cans fully functional. Approach angle is still a little compromised (see the photo) but less so than the genuine kit and mine is removable also.

I bought a sturdy looking crossbar with 2" reese receiver from the wreckers (pickapart - it came off some jap van, didn't pay too much attention) for $30. I had to modify it a bit, extending it 30mm each end with some 75mm box and some 10mm plate. Overall easier than starting from scratch I think. After a lot of tacking and grinding I got it to fit between the chassis rails almost perfectly while having the winch in its tray snug against the bumper and under my nudge bar. Original bolts were thrown out and replaced with slightly bigger 7/16 high tensile bolts. I haven't finished the wiring yet but I intend to use anderson plugs front and rear and run 0 gauge welding cable to the rear. I'll make up a cover for it out of fibreglass and gelcoat over the next few weeks I think, hopefully similar looking to the original winch cover which is unobtainium.

Crossbar with receiver fresh back from the powdercoat people

Bumper off and bar in place, well behind crush cans so they should still do their job

Winch in it's tray in place

Car on 'high' setting showing approach angle

View from the front with number plate off, invisible when number plate is back on

Winch is a Tigerz 12,000lb in a Tigerz removable tray with 28m of dyneema rope.

PS. I'm an expert at taking off and replacing that bumper, I could do it in my sleep I reckon now

Right on Clark, Job VERY Well Done!

That's almost exactly what I have been aiming at but struggling to get to actually start... now, how long can I borrow it off you for (to copy cat)?!?!?

The photo's didn't blow up really clear for me... does it (the mount) disappear behind the number plate area like RonRon's?

And also, do you think we should try and get a Melbourne P38 crew together again for some LR/RR time sharing and therapy?

You could borrow if for a couple of weeks if you wanted - long as you didn't hurt my powder coat :D It's positioned to suit my exact winch and winch tray but it'd still be a good place to start. The mount is totally hidden when the number plate is on. The most forward part of the hitch receiver is about an inch back from the front face of the bumper. The back part of it is about 1cm away from the aircon radiator. Melbourne get together would be fun again some time.

Sounds perfect... funny, I have had the Tigerz tray under the house as inspiration for about 5 months! Very slack hey?!?

I also have an old RRC rear haymen reece ready to modify, so hoping your good work can save me the mess around with dimensions etc.

The Tigerz11 12000 is also my preferred unit given it can winch up and down and also be used as a hoist if necessary. Do they still have 3year warranty?

Anyway, I will have to give you a call very soon (think I already owe you one) to arrange a pick up time place!

Finally, any other Melbourne (or country, or perhaps interstate visitor) P38'ers interested in a get together sometime over summer?

Very nice. I like the versatility.

All these people out there playing with their p38's.

Inspiring and a touch depressing at the same time, as I'm still in my D1.

Could you please show us a picture of the winch tray and the part of the whinch tray that slides into the receiver?

Looks great! Just what I have been dreaming of while wheeling alone.

Here's the tray I used - it seems very sturdy and about $100. I took my handles off, didn't need em
http://tigerz11.com.au/products/DETACHABLE-WINCH-HITCH-RECEIVER-.html

Here's the Warn one - bit more pricey but better brand name
Warn Industries - Mounting Systems: Multi-Mount Winch Mounting System (http://www.warn.com/truck/mounting-systems/multi_mount.shtml)

There's loads of other ones around too. Those are the two I looked at though. This site has another couple
Detachable Winch Mounts, Cradle Winch Mount - TruckSpring.com (http://www.truckspring.com/winch/winch-mounts/detachable-winch-mount.aspx)

I had a few doubts about them initially but the ARB guy said Warn wouldn't put their name on it if they didn't trust it and he reckoned he'd never heard of one failing /shrug Ended up buying the Tigerz one anyways for the price and Tigerz Australia also said they'd never had one fail.

Do you have drawings/dimensions, etc of your mount.

Save me having to reinvent the wheel.

I can't find them at the moment =/ Dave (DT-P38) borrowed it for a while to take some dimensions etc - hopefully he's got some.

Yep, have some pic's but am just on here checking out last minute postings/info for greendale gathering... will try and get them off the I'm an individual-phone and post early next week.

Ok, for those who want them here are the pic's I took of the "Junosi Discreet Winch Mount" that was to assist me in making my "copycat" version. They don't really tell the full story, but use them if you want. FWIW, I am jumping off this as a DIY now anyway.

I saw Junosi's completed set up first hand at the Greendale gathering and if I have it right he may be getting a batch made up (heavy duty steel professionally welded and powder coated). Seeing as I am (at best) a novice/beginner backyard welder, and I have to spend about $100 just on raw materials, I will be putting myself down as number 1 in waiting for the Junosi Mount.

Clark, can you confirm that I got that 'batch approach' correct please. And also how do I go about ordering/buying one. From memory, Martyn was interested to buy as well.

Hoo Roo, Dave and the pretty pig

P.S. Paul at Hard Range mentioned he could probably list them for you on their website or perhaps put up a link of some sort if you were interested.

Not sure when, or ever that will happen I'm afraid. I had a couple more made up by a friend who has since run out of 2" reciever steel (the hitch part) - it's a pain to get hold of. It is very DIY'able though, particulaly if you frankenstein a heavy duty tow hitch off of another vehicle for the 2" receiver part.

ah well, back to the "one day" DIY again!

Since i'll sell a commercial version of something different but similar, i decide to chime in.

I understand that any land rover enthusiast wants to DIY that sort of thing:) but for safety sake, please :

-assemble your junkyard bits that you weld together in order to make a heavy duty assy.
A rear mount hitch receiver (and most commercial front mount hitch receivers) wasn't designed to handle side winching so keep that in mind.

-use high tensile bolts instead of factory bolts.

Junosi, i'm sure you took into account all that safety requirements but i thought that it could be interesting to warn all other copycats:angel:

Paid for my Tigerz11 winch today! It's this one >
Tigerz11.com.au (http://www.tigerz11.com.au/12000lb_two_speed.html)

Suppose I better get it settled into the portable cradle and start some serious planning for build of my Junosi Discreet Winch Mount!!!

Might try to make an informal "Melbourne P38 gathering" around this one, anyone interested in a few beers, a chat, and doing some minor car maintenance jobs in my sloping carport some time over the next few months?

yep, I haven't been down that way in weeks ;)

Might even get my Warn XD winch fitted before then, or bring it down and do it there.

I've updated the link on an earlier page for the winch cradle from Tigerz11.

It's now Tigerz11 - DETACHABLE WINCH HITCH (http://tigerz11.com.au/products/DETACHABLE-WINCH-HITCH-RECEIVER-.html)

I just bought one. It was reduced from $79 to $49. However with the shipping and handling charges, it was $75.

Hi Ron, the advert says the cradle has the "...standard 10"x 4" bolt pattern"
Is this exactly 10" x 4" centre to centre on your model? I have an Aldi winch and the 4" measurement is actually 114mm centre to centre... am wondering if 10 x 4 is actually 254mm x 114mm?
cheers

Many thanks! Now the question...where does one store it safely for travelling when not in use... in the boot... ?
If it was to be deployed in the rear tow hitch for some reason, am wondering about how to power it... a couple of very heavy gauge cables (#0 or #2 ) I suppose from the main battery or a 100+ AH deep cell in the load compartment...?

19th May 2012, 07:53 PM
Allan, those are my dilemmas, too. I have an AGM in the wheel well but I'm not sure that it's suitable for winching.

Also, even with heavy cabling, how does one make a heavy duty, quick release, power connector?

Hoges
19th May 2012, 08:34 PM
Can solve the HD connectors: either Dinse or JB type welding cable connectors should do it... 300amp or 500 amp twist lock/quick release. To power it for short bursts, was thinking about the SSB HVT AGM Deep Cycle 12V 130AH battery 31 size dry cell which is supposedly good for 1000 CCA.
Still a lot to carry around for 'just in case'.
Am thinking of using my winch for a small crane to get garden rubbish etc stuff from the back yard to the top deck of the house (= street level) it's about a 7m drop...;)

Bugger I hate seeing my old posts pop up a year plus later with nothing finished... I guess that warranty on the winch must be down a year or so by now.

Stuff it, pulling the bumper tomorrow and getting that thing started!

Went and had a look at a V8 County to perhaps buy today. Not like I really should be getting into another project though hey?

Hi guys,
I'm about to start similar project am just waiting on bullbar to arrive so I can sort all details out but am looking to set up removable winch initially for front / rear mount and possibly later to be side mounted also from future rock sliders maybe. Was thinking along lines of anderson plug connections unless anyone can advise if they may not be suitable(ideal) if anyone can comment on this approach would welcome all views.

I'm only talking about a lowly D2a, but have had a front hitch installed (built into my ARB deluxe bar) and will be using I think about 300A Anderson plugs for front and rear winch/detachable cradle connections. There are larger plugs available, but I'm assured not necessary

Get the missus to sort out the finger food and we can watch and play with P38's I need to pick up some more 6mm tees for EAS as the fancy chrome expensive ones I got from Festool are crap and are leaking.
I'm sure you've got something you want to do too. Talk later!

Hi Junosi, the one thing I cant see from this is how the new receiver bar is mounted to the chassis. Did you drill new holes in the chassis, or utilise some existing ones? Thanks!

Junosi, the main question some years on from the installation. How successful has it been? Are there any elements you would have changed in hindsight?

I've been procrastinating over a winch for a while now an yours appears to be the perfect discreet compromise.

Really like this, could pick up one of the Warn receivers, cut the mounting points off to the right width for the chassis arms and re-weld plates with the right pitch holes. Are the holes already in the chassis arms?

Pick up the car on Tuesday so making plans!

Yes chassis has holes already (for the factory mount I think). 2 on each side.
