View Full Version : Stopping iPhone from accessing mobile data

My daughter bought a new Iphone 4 and gave me her old iPhone 3G. But the blasted thing seems to want to access data via the mobile phone network. I just checked my pre-paid balance and the phone has sucked up multiple hits of over $5 when I've done nothing with it.
I assume it has something to do with apps I've installed.
Is it possible to stop it accessing mobile data? I don't want to access the internet or other stuff via a phone.
I've reverted the phone from iOS 4.?? to 3.1.3

check all the settings for push data etc and turn them off.

I've only found one place where push is mentioned.
It seems some of the data use is from "free" apps pushing adverts, especially Google video adverts. Also, I played a free version of Solitaire (now deleted) and that cost money in data charges.
I noticed my wife's 3GS running iOS 4.1 has an option the 3G running 3.1.3 doesn't, i.e., under:
Settings->General->Network hers has Cellular Data On or Off. iOS 3.1.3 doesn't.
I don't know if changing to iOS4 would fix the problem.
I think the iPhone might have to be turned off as a phone and only use it as a PDA. It's simply too expensive to use.

I have the iPhone 4 running version 4.1 and as you say, I can (and do) turn data off when I don't need it.
I would assume that updating to 4.??? whatever the latest is would give you that option.
Someone hear must have updated and could confirm.

Go to settings, select Mail, Calender etc. If there is an email account and you don't want it, delete it by selecting the account and then the big red Delete Account at the bottom.
Go back to the previous screen and then select Fetch New Data.
At the top is Push, turn it off and at the bottom select Manual for the frequency.
That should fix it.
It and the apps won't access data automatically unless you have set it up to do so, its aparently illegal to manufacture them to do so and is considered fraudulent income or something. It's not as if they domt make enough already......
Cheers

Done. Thanks Andrew.
Another thing I've learned. I inadvertently pressed a name (or was it address) in Contacts expecting to be able to edit it (I'm used to Windows CE PDAs). The iPhone loaded Google maps to show me the location of the contact. More expense.
These "features" are not good when one is on a prepaid plan where data costs $1 per Mb.
I've moved all the useless in-built apps (which can't be removed and which cost money in data usage) for which I have no use , i.e., YouTube, iTunes, App Store, Mail, Stocks, and Weather to a third screen so that they can't be accidentally pressed. I'm sure I'll move others, too. Safari, Camera, and Maps may be next - they have already been moved to the second screen.

With the contacts thing, that's probably the Location Services function.
Go to settings, General and it should be in the same group as Network and Bluetooth. Turn that off as well.
Your getting charged high rates most likely a your prepaid possibly won't include any or very little data quota.

Location Services now turned off.
I make so few phone calls, a $30 recharge usually lasted me over six months (I'm on a fixed $1 per call plan) - until I got an iPhone!

I found it quite easy in an initial iPhone 4 set up to get it organised minimising data use and maximising battery life. Was a complete iPhone newb.
It would be hard to figure out how to do this on a phone that had a user's personal settings already on it. Push and Location Services would eat data usage if activated.
I only ended up with this phone because my last Motorola's glass got smashed (again) and then went missing, with all contacts. Also needed a bigger plan.
Just for info........... I'm on Telstra $79 plan ($750 calls, 2Gb data, free iPhone 4) If phone is lost or trashed I get a new one for 1/2 price, get SMS if and when I exceed 80% call or data plan limit.
So far have only got up to 120 Mb of data use in a month. Easy to monitor: Settings, General, Usage.
Pretty happy with it. The HD video capture is just awesome.
cheers, DL

I found yet another free app (a units converter) that downloads adverts from Google and costs money. A quick use of the app cost $2.83 in data charges. I've since deleted that app. It was from the iTunes store.

So why not get a prepaid with an allocated data limit built in??
Depending on who your with, there are plenty of different options available, but you do need to ask, particularly with Telstra....
Not sent from my PC using Firefox!!

If you only want a phone, why not ditch the iPhone and go back to your old phone. It's probably a Nokia, and as a straight phone goes probably better than an iPhone anyway.

All too expensive. I send, on average, about one SMS per week. Most weeks I send none.
I make about one telephone call a week - if that. Nearly every prepaid plan has unused credits expiring after 30 days. My current Telstra plan has the credit expiring after 6 months so a $30 recharge lasts me for ages. My present credit expires in April 2011 and the calls are a fixed $1 each.

The iPhone has replaced my XDA IIi PDA phone which was killed when a phone handset fell onto the screen.
I have a Nokia 6500 slide but it recently developed a few lines across the screen just in the right place to obscure phone numbers in the phone book. The Samsung C5220 NextG blue tick phone is what I use if I go into the country but it's not a great phone to use and its screen is too small to read without a magnifying glass.
As noted above, I don't make phone calls so it doesn't matter to much about usability. I need the phone so I can be called. I generally don't return missed calls.
I don't want to waste my credits on data - which costs about $1 per Mb with Telstra.

and a bit like buying a 4WD when you have no intention of going off road or even towing ?
If you're not using the functionality of the phone, why be tied to it.
(btw they are hopeless as a hands free phone where you want voice control, my biggest disappointment with the iPhone)

I use all the other feature, e.g., apps, contact list, music player, etc. Just not the phone but it is included so I can use it when needed - just as I did with my previous Windows CE PDA phone.
The PDA features are what I use most.
I think I'll downgrade to iOS 4.2 to see if the block cellular data option does the trick.

Do you want your old, old phone back Ron?
I gave up on figuring it out & passed it on to my Mum. I don't think she's too keen on it.
I'll ask her on Saturday :).

No, Scott. I don't want it. It's locked to Vodaphone.
I've downgraded the iPhone to iOS 4.2.1 - it's much slower but I can turn Cellular Data off. I checked my account and Telstra charged me $2/MB - I thought it was bad enough when I assumed it was $1/MB!
