When I bought my machine it did not go. I had a new clutch installed and there has always been a clanking sound when depress the clutch to change gears. The Gearbox has been overhauled and I am sure the noise is not from there. (1985 V8 County)

What could it be??

Gday Jim,

I take it this is whilst on the move. Either way a good start is to have someone push the clutch whilst you are under there and search for the noise, remember safety first:).
Basically 110's transmit alot of noise so easiest to try and isolated the area. I would be checking all bushes for play, rear A ball joint, T/C, uni's , all the normal suspects and fluids and lubrications.
Is the clunk all the time in every gear change or can you finesse it. Mine clunks if I am a bit rough with changes, but I am also up for a new clutch in the future. Just remember all 110's seem to clunk a bit, have a look at the Puma threads, so even new one's. Just try an isolate the area as best you can. There are plenty of topics on the clunks so have a good read.

Quick guess - dragging handbrake. Chock front wheels and jack up a rear wheel to confirm the prop shaft spins feely when the gearbox is in neutral. I predict you will find that the handbrake is dragging.

The clanking is from the slack in the transmission being reversed when you remove forward drive by declutching. The rear prop shaft will be the principal sounding board.

I jacked up one rear whe and turned it. I could hear this faint brush of the lining on the drum as I rotated the wheel. So I released the brake lining two notches and then there was no drag I could hear.

I took the LR for a test run. I still had a clank on depressing the clutch but it was less I thought. Then I decided to test the holding power of the handbrake ona steep little incline in the street. When I went to drive off after releasing the handbrake lever, the car would not move.

I put it in low range and drove very slowly to a level spot. ( I walked home in a dejected state and returned with tools). I released the brake lining another 6 notches (very hard for first one), and hit the drum with a hammer. It released and I drove home. (trudged back and got the other car).

Has anyone had the handbrake sieze like that? Whats to do?

More then likely oil contamination of the pads. Pull the rear prop off, undo drum , big nut and check oil seal. Mine had the seal go and use to show up when I would reverse, it would grab. I just renewed seal replaced pads, good ever since.

the dry lube thats in the handbrake mech has become contaminated. pull the hbrake down and then clean up with brake clean. Allow to dry then relube.

IF your a fan of wet lubes a molybond grease or nickle based antisieze works well

If your a fan of dry lubes a teflon or silicone based spray lubricant

Another thing to consider!
Did you replace the spigot bush when you replaced the clutch.

This can be another source of clunks when declutching.

Well after I eased the handbrake off, the clunking continued and then to add to my worries the handbrake locked. I got it unlocked (and it locked again) and decided to dismantle everything and free up what ever need fixing. Fer disconnecting the tail shaft at the brake drum, I was stumped because the two Allen key screws attaching the drum were in so tight I could not release them. I actually twisted an Allen key to near destruction.

So I am returning the car to the gorilla who tightened the screws for his attention in the new year.

I might have one more go if I get time by heating them up with the oxy, but if not, back to the garage it goes...and then we will talk about the clunking which may or may not disappear after the handbrake drag is fixed.

So the story ends happily. The LR man (Davis Performance Landrover) says that if adjusted off too much, the slides can jam. And the screws I was trying to undo with an allen key are in fact secured with an impact socket and needs same to undo.

They pulled the handbrake drum and bits apart, found a distorted back plate, which they replaced, reassembled and all my problems with clanking appear to have gone.

There a little bit of noise between gear changes, but Davis assures me its a bit of lash in the transmission which is understandable after 220k ks. and not worth spending cash to chase down.
