HI

Bad morning , went to load up paddle board in the car and pushed a little hard against front windscreen and (**&^&%^%$#$$@$@$) yep smashed it ! Cracked actually , but either way , a replacement needed.

Any one here had to replace an 08 defender heated windscreen ( not sure if SVX is different with heated fillaments in the screen ). If so how much and any particular dealer reccomended or the old Windscreens obriens?

Thanks

My L322 has a heated screen and they are quite expensive, the defender shouldn't be that bad,a normal one is only $100. Pat

Good point, don't you get a windscreen for free?. Pat

I would have thought the comprehensive policy would pay for any damage incurred less the standard excess regardless of the component [panel, glass, mirror etc] which was damaged.

My insurance did not have the one free windscreen option , so Ill just claim under normal insurance. Excess is $550 , so I will claim.

If the windscreen didnt have the demister in it , I would have been up for only $378 fitted as quoted by Obriens.

Given the demister version is onyl gong to cost me $172 by using the insurance option ,I think it is its worth paying the xtra.

I had Obriens fit a new screen on my defender and they charged me $100 for the screen and $50 to fit it.I wonder what the difference is?. Pat

I was talking to a windscreen fitter the other day. He was telling us that windscreens for some newer cars with rain sensors etc can cost $3-4000 :eek:

potentially dumb question, but do you really *need* a heated windscreen?

Yep demister is def worth it. Particularly in colder wet climates.

A few weeks ago there was an ebay seller in Ballarat (VIC) with new heated windscreens for Defenders. For $300 it even included a relay and switch for converting any Defender to a heated screen. I should have put it on my watch list, but didn't.

I think that a lot of cars now can only use 'genuine' replacement glass as noone makes a generic version and the dealers charge whatever they want.
I had a Mitsubishi Express van and a cable drum rolled thru the back window:o $1100 and that was 7 years ago. When I asked the installer was it because of the demister he gave me the above explanation. some little side windows in Hilux etc were $$$$$.
You can imagine how expensive insurance premiums are going to get as they factor this (1 free?!! screen) into the premium :(

Don't know who the seller was? I need a screen and one of these would be excellent:)

It's someone who sold Land Rover parts. If it wasn't Ballarat, then it was Bendigo. There's someone there who imports parts and makes diff guards and so on. I've seen the adverts elsewhere, but can't remember who / where.

Try an ebay search for "Land Rover" with the Ballarat or Bendigo postcodes and a 100km radius. Try other sites, such as LROCV, or even search here. If I find it I'll let you know.

$100! Christ! I got a quote from Obriens to reseal mine (spent too many years under the sun) and they quoted $200 for the rubber + $200 for the fitment ++ another $458 if the windscreen broke and they had to replace it!

I'd cream myself if I could get a replacement windscreen for $100 and $50 to get it fitted! :-(

I got Novus to do mine a month or two back. Some thing like $170 fitted and an extra $40 for the seal if it was required which it wasn't. They were there the next day to fit it as well.

I wont use o'briens based on that they are a rip off.. they give you the sweetner of a $100 voucher for chip repair, but charge you a couple of hundred over the odds...

I use the local glass repairer, they came to me at work, had the disco's glass out and in quick smart and left everything looking as it should be, no marks, no nothing... as though they hadnt been..

Last screen i had dont by obriens had to back 2 times as they didnt stick the rear view mirror on?!? then there were trim problems..

Sure mine wasn't a special windscreen, but it was replaced this morning (Premier Glass, Sydney), took about 15 minutes in the rain, and cost me near nothing as its part of GIO insurance to get one piece of glass replaced free per year (don't pay excess or lose rating either) :)

No problems at all, except two trim screws were rounded before today so couldn't be put back in

P.S. I will never use O'Briens either. I have my reason ;)

I got a quote if $1200 from my local stealer:eek: i ended up putting in a normal screen for $225. With the screen being flat it offers no deflection for stones and i collected 8 stars in 1 year so i will sacrafice this screen and fit an original heated one when i come to sell it. My heated one never worked that well anyway.

I have similar issue with rear door glass for 09 Puma - stone from a truck shattered as passed by me on the M1! Replacement quotes vary from $598 to $826. My insurance (just car) will cover w/o affecting my rating/claim status but just pay excess of $500. I guess it's still worth going the insurance option but going to research if cheaper option.
I've heard of some getting tempered glass cut w/o demister and just living with that?

I had to do the tempered plate glass thing in the past. Working Central Africa makes Land Rover the perfect vehicle (As if there was any doubt!) due to many reasons including the fact that all major glass is completely flat. I had a number of windscreens on 300Tdi's, left passenger window and rear sliding windows cut from sheets for a small bundle of dollars. I haven't done the rear one though. They don't break that often, even in crashes, so the chances of finding one at the breakers is always good. Depending on where you live, not having demisters might be a bit of a pain.

Giving credit where credit's due:

2 x stone chips after last trip, w/screen replaced by O'Briens on insurance (Shannons). Cost to me - $0. W/screen was Chinese XYG. What a piece of crap. More waves than the Pacific Ocean, makes you seasick to look out of. Do not ever let anyone replace your w/screen with XYG brand.

Rang up O'Briens who rang Shannons who authorized ordering a genuine OE w/screen from UK (have to wait 3 weeks) all at a cost to me of $0.

Gotta be happy with that.
