Hi Forumites,
Can the serpentine belt be replaced without taking the fan off? Is this a job you could tackle roadside? Fuel pump belt, anybody broken one, or had one break? Are these roadside jobs? Assuming you have the belts and a reasonable tool kit not just a hammer and chisel.
Thanks for any constructive comments.

Ta Stig,
I had a look today, we're setting off on a trip tomorrow. I'm sure they will be fine, I just thought I would ask. I've got the belts I suppose that's half the battle, trying to buy them is a Super Cheap or Repco would be a tad lucky to say the least. Thanks for the response.

Hi Stig,

yer all good, the belts when we take them off all seem pretty well off, never herd of one snap to if that helps, but theres allways a first:o(i dident say that)

if your planing on doing deepish water crossings maby get it changed a lil earlier to be safe, the belts covers are not sealed, cost i think is about 1200ish for the cam and pump belt change, sorta a big job with special tools,

HI Stig,
No, no water crossings, well not expected anyway, we're off to Alice Springs via the GCR to cook for a few days, then going to Melbourne, through Adelaide and back to Perth over the Nullabor.

If you get the numbers you can get Dayco or Gates belts for all LR's through any bearing shop for a fraction of the dealer price, like stig said they aren't a roadside job.I changed my Td6 one this week and took the fan and shroud out to do it,it's a good couple of hours job. Pat

Marty,

When we get together, bring the new belt here and I'll show you how to replace it.

Hi Pat,
What vintage is your D3, was it a couple of hours for one belt or both? It's to late for me to change mine now, when I checked the belt today it looked fine, no cracking or scuffing evident. Agree with you about the main serpentine belt but the fuel pump belt came with the adjuster mechanism in a kit, and the adjuster has a "special" locking pin in place to make the replacement easier. I've bought them now, if either belt breaks the price I paid will seem cheap, at least I have the right ones, the price did hurt..... I admit that.

Hi Richard,
I'll come around when I get back, mid Jan (ish). I'm not sure if you use the Exploroz site but you'll be able to see my progress, I got one of the GSM tracker software gizmos on my phone. You know my tags. Thanks for the offer. All the best.

Fuel pump belt, you will need 'small child hands', a mirror, torch and oodles of patience. Did I mention the 'small child hands' ???:mad: I lost quite a bit of skin and several years off my life the first one I replaced:(

These are a necessary job at 120 to 140K, or 5 to 6 years max. The serpentine belt and cambelt by comparison are a cinch.

Good luck.

The parts to do all the belts have arrived from UK, including a new oil pump with the beefed up webbing to support the belt idler. Picked up the special timing tools for $15. Planning this job next rainy day

Are there any tricks or tutorials on the fuel pump belt change out? The Topix instructions are pretty straight forward, but looking at the confined access to the back of the motor will need skin grafts. (like Justinc)

Here is a guide with pictures:
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - TDV6 timing belt - How To... (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic53674.html)

Good luck with doing them, a word of warming if you feel you may break something when trying to undo the rear tensioner bolt. Don't do it! if your break this bolt it is a body off job to fix it.
This belt at worse can be left until a body off job comes along for something else. If it breaks it will not stuff your engine, it will just stop.

Cheers Rich
