Gday All,

Am unsure if thats what its called , but its the joint or baffle on the exhaust pipe ( looks like crisscrossed wire) just down from the turbo on the TD5.

Has anyone had any problems with this?

What were your symtoms, and are they able to just replace that part or is there a better option

A few questions I know, but am wondering if mine is or has failed..

Many thanks

Cheers Ean

Yes they do fail Ean, some will make a rattle and some can 'squeal' slightly on power, best way to check is have a close look for black soot staining in the weave of stainless wire, and get underneath and push it up and down, if it is loose and/ or rattles when you tap the engine pipe with your fist it is no good.

I have the same bit on my Freelander and mine has failed - initially there was a little whistle that I thought was from the turbo - later as the hole got bigger it began to sound like a typical hole in the exhaust pipe. I have a complete new section of pipe to go in but the flexible joint itself can be purchased from most exhaust shops who can cut the old one out and weld in a new one in if you do not want to buy a complete section of exhaust from Land rover.

Sorry forgot to mention that, I usually just get the exhaust place next door to insert a stainless flex piece, about $80 to $90 for the part plus fitting.

Well think I may have found my mystery noise..

first I grabbed the joint and when I looked at my hand I could see the black exhaust marks on my fingers.

So I got under the car and shook the exhaust and it sounds like there's a few marbled loose in there.

Off to the exhaust shop tommorrow, to see if we can get a new piece put in..

Many thanks Guys..

Hi Andrew,

Been thinking of removing mine. How much noisier is it with-out the muffler?

Bit more burbly under a bit of pedal but cruise speed it's actually not to bad. I've had a few who have heard it approach me and ask if it's been chipped!
"... Nope, just took the muffler out."
Leave the rear resonator in though. If it's a bit too much, just get a hotdog put in place.
Haven't heard mine from the outside yet though.....

Cheers

Sounds strong in traffic,at highway speeds slightly louder than normal but doesnt intrude in the cab.
In some situations, namely uphill on the highway when using cruise control it is a little too loud in the cab, only occurs whilst the cruise catches up to the set speed, guessing the ECU uses the loud pedal harder than I do.

Mine being a manual with 235/85 tyres, spools up the turbo quicker and gets mooving off the mark easier than it used too,I doubt you would pick the difference in an auto.
Wouldnt hesitate to do the mod again!!!

dragging an old thread back to life.

booked mine in for the flex joint to be replaced and the centre muffler removed and a straight through pipe put in.
i was thinking of getting the rear resonater replaced with a hotdog, would this make sense or would the hotdog normally go in place of the center muffler??
appreciate some feedback on this as would rather do once.
