Just seeking some information for those who have been across on the car ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento (Vic).

Is it recommended - coming from S.A and heading to Lakes Entrance - rather than negotiating through outer Melbourne suburbs on a week day?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Erich

it's really easy - the ferry leaves on the hour, every hour. I'm certain there's a website for it too....

crossing is usually very smooth. If you don't appreciate the movement, it's less down on the vehicle deck and there are open windows down there for air.

It can get quite cold though!!

The ferry is easy, but depending on what time of the day you would be coming through, it wont save you any time. If you plan your trip so you are coming into Melbourne mid morming, you will have an easy run. If you use the ferry, you will end up on secondary roads which will loose you time. It would also be further using the ferry. If you come through Melb, once you get to Geelong, you will be on freeway all the way to Traralgon - if you use city link and the tunnels. I would highly recommend you get a day pass and do this.

If you aren't in a rush, the ferry route is much more scenic, and well worth doing.

Cheers, Gav.

Thanks for the replies.

The plan is to get from Port Campbell to Lakes Entrance in one day with the least traffic hassle around Melbourne CBD.

Just trying to work out which is the best option.

Thanks Erich

PS: This is not for me, but for a family member who has never travelled down that way and doesn't really like city traffic.

Decent trip. Probably about 7 hours of driving. Through the city would be a more direct route, and easier to navigate. The freeway runs right past the city, so there are no turn offs or anything to worry about, its straight through, but on the ferry would be less traffic in most places, but if they don't know the route, make sure they have a gps, as they could get lost between Sorento and getting back on the freeway.

Might pay to check to cost of the ferry trip I think it's quite expensive compared to freeway tolls. If you time your freeway run out of peak hour it's a comfortable run.I thought it was great when towing the van -no all the time clutch work as opposed to minor roads. However the ferry is a great ride and you can check out historic Queenscliffe.

Given the time frame I would miss the ferry and stick to the free/toll ways.
Given the starting point he'll miss the peak run:)
Once on the new Geelong bypass you just follow you nose to Lakes.
Watch the speeds though as some cameras watching and waiting for that little bit over;)
Once over the westgate to avoid the CBD stay on the toll way(feeds straight on to it).
Some tolling info here...Breeze - Home (http://www.breeze.com.au/default.aspx)
Fairly well signposted and the key is to pick your lane early.

PS. Ferry trip $60+ one way

Hi Erich, take the ferry, even if it’s longer and it would not be much longer, it’s a great way to take a break plus the ferry trip in itself is worth the ride.

Here’s a link to the ferry info.

Searoad : Queenscliff - Sorrento Car & Passenger Ferry Service (http://www.searoad.com.au/flash/searoad.html)

Once in Sorrento, head to Rosebud and watch for the signs to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, this is the quickest way up the Peninsula.

If you don’t mind a bit of back road driving, you can cut across from the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to the Pacific Highway and miss all the major centres.

from someone that was born and bred on the peninsula (only moved away a couple of years ago), the freeway route will be much quicker, especially this time of year. but not as scenic:(

X2.

Ferry route is scenic, but will more than likely take a lot longer and is fairly pricey, my advice would be stay on the A1 (M1) Princes Freeway, go around Geelong on the new ring road and stay on the M1 up to Melbourne.Go through the Tunnel (as already mentioned you can buy a day pass) and head on down to lakes entrance. If you are looking at doing this trip in a day then you are looking at 7-8 Hours.
