Hi all.
Can anyone please advise where the best place to buy top hat liner kits for the 3.9 V8? Preferably WA, but really don't care where from anymore.
Not confirmed yet, but thinking this is the road I'll be travelling! :(:(

Don't have the additional expenses for the "usual recommendation" of just slapping a 4.6 in, so looking at the alternative, and what seems to be a more permanent fix.

Some good reading here for those that haven't yet seen it:

Check out Triumph Rover Spares website.
Was looking at a P38a sometime ago that was perfect bar the engine.
They were the cheapest in Australia for a rebuilt engine with the tophats.

Buy direct from Turner Engineering in the UK. Cost about $75 each. Check the website for details and email them for specs. Consider 9.35 pistons from the same source - about $50 each.

They have all sorts of goodies to go on with.

And I agree with LandyAndy - TRS give the best price/service combo in Oz for this type of stuff.

Import from UK? Remember the $1000 rule!

(Less than $1000 and no GST)

Try M&D engineering in Carlisle. I know a guy who purchased the liners from QLD and took them to these guys to fit in his D2 and has had no problems since.

M&D also claim to have had success by using normal liners and machining a step at the bottom of the bore to stop them moving, but I'd be sticking with top hat liners.

Davis Performance Landys in Sydnye did mine. If I recall correctly, the liners were $800 for the 8 (supply).

I have had 3 engines done with standard 3.9 liners with the step at the bottom
the first one did or is still doing over 400000k's the second is in my current rangie, I had it done over 8 years ago but only fitted the motor last year, and so far has done just on 20k and the third well I sold the rangie but I am sure its still going
Highly reccomend M&D I have been dealing with them since 1984

But if the bore cracks behind the liner the coolant travels upwards;the liner may not slip down with a ridge at its base, but the coolant escapes anyway. Only top hats resolve the problem completely - one reason some LR specialists won't guarantee even new Coscast blocks, but will stake their life on the top hat solution.

TR Spares quoted $3500- for a short top hat 4.6 around a year ago, would have been my solution except for finding a new short block cheaper.

Would be NICE! ;)
Unforunately funds won't stretch quite that far.
Can get top hat liners fitted, getting hold of them in "kit" form is proving a greater difficulty!

Thanks for that (Sarah/John...??)
Got a response back via email from V8Developments (http://www.v8developments.co.uk/) in the UK this morning with the followig quote:

Yes we can supply the Top Hat sleeves to you direct. They do require specialist fitting, the company we use to do it uses liquid nitrogen to chill the liners, warms the block and then allows to cool for 24 hours before skimming the block deck surface to finish the installation, the block needs to be machined for the rebate before the process begins. The liners are £280 a set of 8 and shipping will be around £75 I am afraid.

(incidently, shipping quoted to Perth, Aus...not UK mainland)
which works out at todays rate at $546 AUS (£355 GBP) inc overseas delivery! Which works out a little cheaper than TVR Powers price per liner unit, not taking p&p into account.

Have yesterday been quoted just over $800 just for 8 liners from a mob over East Oz excluding delivery!

Thanks for the link though, much appreciate it.

turner engineering liners are made from ductile iron. personally don't know if the little bit extra $ required for these is worth it but may be worth investigating. not sure what the liners you're looking at are made from.

Rover V8 engine parts including flanged linered and Coscast block castings (http://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/acatalog/search.html&WD=liner&PN=4.0V8.html%23a1_21709#a1_21709)

have you had a price for machining costs?

seems ductile may be worth it according to this article : http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Article/59170/engine_blocks__cylinder_sleeves.aspx

That would be where the extra $$$ are and for the little difference make it worth the extra.

Ductile liners are by far a better option. The main reason for ductile is that they can be made thinner meaning less machining of the block parent bore to fit and have more flexibility than cast liners when setting in so a better block to liner contact.
Peter at M&D generally uses the Precision Liners. Let me make a call tomorrow and see what I can do for you. My current manager used to be the Sales Manager there :) plus I have dealt with them for years.
Will PM you my number.
