Some of you may have read about me having a P38 to borrow for a while.
Some of you joked it would be hard to go back to the Defender.
Some of you said I wouldn't give it back.
So... I NEED a diesel P38.
I have a 2004 TD5 defender 130...... with 99000 onthe clock-worth something..
2001 DHSE's go for 3000-6000 Pounds in the UK, so if I buy one, what am I looking at in duties/tax/ and more importantly cost of shipping?
ADR stuff has no impact, I have that sorted!
Thoughts?

Sounds pretty good if you can land a DHSE here for $11-12k.
I would love a TD5 engine in one/mine.
Thinking about parts for the engine in Aussie is a problem if it is a DHSE.
You can buy a 2005 Rangie for $30k these days, less headaches?????

not sure of the exact rules but pretty sure you need to own it in country 'UK' for 12? months prior to shipping, which would mean living in the UK for 12 months, this might blow the budget

Don't want to rain on your parade as I too would love to buy a few different vehicles from the UK - but am prevented from doing so by the import rules
It's exceedingly difficult to import a car manufactured after 1989 into Australia now (unfortunately). There's only meant to be two ways - own (and use) the vehicle for 12 months overseas prior to importing it (as Weeds said) or the vehicle must be on the RAWS SEVS list (RAWS Australia: SEVS Register (http://www.raws.com.au/SEVSReg.asp))
It's not impossible to get a vehicle added to the RAWS list but the vehicle in question is meant to be substantially different from what is available here - and 'just' being diesel isn't enough...
Guess that's all assuming you have no government friends that can *help* [wink11]

Junosi, (or anyone else) How incomplete does a car have to be to bring in as parts/to wreck?
Would pulling out the BECM or something similar do? I cold always buy another aussie one with a shot engine, and swap over all the parts, ecu's engine etc, would that be another option? Obviously need an engineers cert, but that shouldn't be hard, seeing its dropping in power.....

Here's the only bookmark I've got on that... http://www.customs.gov.au/site/content2304.asp
It might be worth investigating importing a 'half-cut' (front half of a DHSE) with BECM etc intact

It might be worth investigating importing a 'half-cut' (front half of a DHSE)Did Japan get the diesel P38?
There's a few companies that bring out half cuts from there.
Google shows this one in Brisbane:

What are the differences between the petrol/Diesel in terms of specs, i mean could you just get the engine, computer and the other few bits from a wrecker in the UK, import that, and convert a petrol?
I have no idea so that's just a suggestion.:)
Other than that, i think you could probably squeeze into an L322 V6 Diesel for around 30K.

You can bring it in as parts only and do a drive line swap... but u cant import it in and licence it.....
Otherwise everyone would do it...

A local "spares" bloke here in Brisbane (Kelvin Grove Rd)...many of you prob know where he is, specialises in spares for RRs and Jags. He sources vehicles from Hong Kong and Japan ...whole.. on the basis that they cannot be road registered but are to be broken down for spare parts...seems to work OK on that basis....my problem is that I don't have a big enough shed:o:(

Thanks guys for all your responses, I think I'll get on to a vehicle importer (there is one that I'm aware of nearby) and find out what they can do for me...I'd prefer to bring a whole working vehicle over if possible for 2 reasons, one, I'll be sure to have all the bits I need, and two, I'll know the removal and install is done properly!
Cheers,
Fraser
