Hola from South America!!!!
First pardon my english.
I have a 1994 Defender 110 V8 (3.5 dual carbs) 5 speed I want to put a diesel engine and I was hoping you guys can give me the good and bad from these two engines. I have no issues with emissions or insurance laws here. I live in Bogota Colombia altitude around 2800 meters and I tow a 2500lbs trailer and we are a family of six, I need TORQUE power to be able to pass trucks going up hill. please feel free to advice.
muchas gracias amigos!!!

Welcome and Merry Christmas to you. Definitely a 4BD1T and you will need a good LT95 4 speed box if you are towing in hilly country. It will mince the 5 speed box currently in it.

what is the advantage of the 4BD1T ? does any one have some type of chart where I can see the power and torque ratings of the two engines?
gracias

Once again everyone is probably going to say 4bd1T once modified to suit your power needs ! Plus it is a very strong engine!

Perhaps you should consider the Grubb isuzu gearbox conversion, I am sure he would ship an adaptor to the LT 230 tranfer and gearchange mechanism conversion over to you and you source a box there, a much stronger box. Look up his thread the conbination of a isuzu 4BD1 and isuzu box will pretty well undestructable even with what you need to carry on you roads there.
Kindest regards

the 4jj1 with the vnt turbo is a very nice motor (current D-Max?). Built very well from what I've read too.

Is fuel quality an issue with these?

C.H.I.E.F = GREAT KNOWLEDGE BUT FEW WORDS!!:D

DOBBO
one reason I like the 4jji is that they use it a lot here in the Dmax trucks easy to get parts and a motorand I like that it's turbo due to the elevation where I live, with the turbo i don't lose power. but evryone seems to perfer the 4bd1t wich I dont know much about.

does anyone know the power and torque rating od the 4JJI motor?
does anyine know the power and torque rating of the 4DB1T motor?
where can I find information on Grubb isuzu gearbox conversion? does he have a web site?

Muchas Gracias Amigos

Well I didnt want to get right into it! But what I ment was how you set it up.. Turbo wise, fueling wise gearing wise etc etc I have a td5 turbo intercooled setup great low down but 120klmh is its max unless a huge hill.
There is much debate on what turbos to run on these engines. There is a guy over there in america that has gone to the extremes of supercharge/turbocharging , bigger injectors, uprated fuel pump etc etc
Cummon dobbo you should hav read that this thread was about 4bd1"T"s not 4bd1's :p

Both engines will probably do.

However if you want to get information on how others have done their conversion, what parts you need to get/adapt this forum has more people with experience on the 4BD1 and conversions to a turbo setup. Reason is that land rovers in Australia came from the show room with the 4BD1 and people have converted them to use a turbo or have swapped out the 3.5l V8 for the diesel.

If the availability and therefore costs is going to push you to the 4JJ1 you will have less help from this forum due to the lesser experience with this motor. I am sure that you will work your way through it if you have to use this motor. Hope you don't have to cut any major structual parts to make it fit.

buena suerte

4BD1T= mechanical injection, proven performer and relatively cheap

4JJ1= electronic everything, a relatively sensitive engine and not cheap
