Hi just wondering would like to post the rough cost of setting up their Disco. Individual items and a total would be great.
It would be very helpful for those looking to buy, how much they can realistically budget for.
Eg:
Bull bar
LED Spotlights
Suspension lift
Front driveshaft changeover
Tyres
Roof racks

Eg:
Bull bar
LED Spotlights
Suspension lift

Assuming all new:
Bullbar - ARB & TJM winch bars retail for around $1600 fitted
LED Spots - never looked
Suspension lift (assuming 2") - a couple of threads about it and some have used this this mob - https://www.suspensionstuff.com.au/shop/index.php?cPath=27_94_113&osCsid=1905b69fff1c95a97e18a12ea80fc1c9
Front driveshaft change over - haven't done it
Tyres - depends on what you want but $250-$300ea would cover it unless you have very expesnive tastes or are more rmote than I am!
Roofracks - never looked but just under $2,000 will get you an ARB Alloy if memory serves me early on a Sunday evening.
Like all things - how deep are your pockets and how long are your arms?

Should be able to work out some figures from here - Les Richmond Automotive (http://www.lrautomotive.com.au/)
I like this rack, and it's a good price - Powerful 4x4 4WD Accessories (http://www.powerful4x4.net.au/store/product.php?productid=17515) - I've seen them list it on ebay before for the D2.
You should also factor in some underbody protection.

Shocks and coils I would get new, maybe Billies or koni with lovell or King springs. Total around $1300.
Roofracks, look on ebay or market section here, they can be had quite cheaply depending on what you are after, I have a set I honestly only use once/twice per year. Work out your $$$.
LED headlights are relatively new so prices are high but a set of light Force 170's fitted cost $400-550.
Well and tyres are depending on what you are after, an ATR is a great option if most time spend on road and be honest with yourself.
Most 4WD's spend hardly anytime off road, maybe just a few hundred K's a year. Off road tyres will be a compromise on the road and braking can be greatly reduced especially in the wet etc.
A good mate bought a car for $4k, it had all the extras he wanted, even a snokel and when he stripped the gear he wanted, he wrecked the car for parts and got $3800 back plus $50 from a wrecker for scrap metal.
Total cost was $150 for a heap of stuff including lift kit and what seemed like new shocks and brand new brake rotors which he also swapped.
They are out there, just keep on looking.
Good luck.
Alternatively you can go to a shop and hand them your visa, walk out and come back 2 days later, $10k poorer and have all new gear.

only prob with them is that you need to electrify your bar or rack to stop would be robbers when you leave your vehicle:p

Ha yeah things getting stolen would be a bit of a worry. Hmm maybe electrifying not such a bad idea...
Thanks for the replies and 'don't forgets' they are helpful. Keep them coming if you wish - I am studiously taking notes.

V8 or Td5?
If Td5 don't forget a larger intercooler and an ECU map upgrade either.

Td5. I wouldn't mind a v8 but diesel better for off road. This list is gettin to be looong. Hopefully I can get a good one with most of the things i'm looking for

Why diesel better off road?:o

IMHO one of the best things about diesels off road is less overheating. The V8 tends to get very hot. A bloke who did soil testing in a RRC 2 door eventually bought a Deefer 300TDi and never looked back. (This was after a number of major upgrades to his cooling by me) His a/c could be run non stop at idle while he did his sampling on a hot day. Diesels are essentially air cooled internally while idling/ going slowly.

Once you get it...put some recovery points on the front and some recovery gear.

That's so the loooong list prevents a looooooong walk home. :D

I see what you are saying but that is not off-roading. That is doing nothing whilst the motor ticks over glazing its bores so the surveyer or what ever he is keeps his cabin cool.
Off roading IMHO is driving in territory not suited to standard vehicles.
I have had many V8's and must say that the low down grunt is brilliant, no wait for turbo to spool up etc, only other car was a Isuzu powered dinosour that crawled up almost anything.
With a good cooling system, my cars never overheated and in very hot weather I never did anything too silly.
Big difference in petrol or diesel was fuel consumption where the diesel won.

Just my observations
Well after going off road with friends, i've observed many petrol cars having issues because of water getting into the spark plug leads, or water simply being enough to short out spark related things. Basically every river crossing, a patrol and a pajero would be misfiring afterwards and would have to pull over and play around with WD40 etc for some time.
Meanwhile the diesel powered cars seem to have no trouble comparatively.
There is also the issue of range for the petrol powered. However I have no problem with having LPG duel fuel if its done properly so that would help a lot.

Water crossings are a bit of a problem if petrol, thats true.
Depending on how deep though and how well done. Disconnect fans and slow and steady with a blanket out front to form a wake etc.
Range is another issue and agree there which is probably main reason I changed to a diesel also.
How would LPG help though? Range? More range with long range tank!
I almost always had lpg put on my petrol Landy's by Bee utey here and have been 100 % reliable but always switched over to petrol when off roading for the extra bit of grunt from idle.

Yes its the river crossings and range that are the main issues. Like I said, I wouldn't have a problem with LPG but I think i'd rather have a diesel.
Anyway back to topic - here is my rough list for things that I will need to buy if i get one that doesn't have anything.
Obviously I will be shopping for one that has some of this stuff already. And installing most of this myself will save on a lot of the cost too.
1600 bull bar
400 lights
1300 suspension
1200 tyres
500 snorkel
350 duel battery
750 cargo barrier
= 5850
+ $1200 things from les richmond that I will end up getting
roughly $7k.
thanks for the help dudes

Whatever D2 you get, regardless of existing mods or mods you plan to do...before any of that...get the oil pump bolt checked.

That is a great list, its one that most of us would have and done so a car that already has all of those and than some should be no trouble at all and will save you a packet as for re-sale, you will get basically nothing for them when fitted to a car.
Mine had all of those plus tow bar, rear maxi locker, extended breather lines, leather, sunroof and perfect service history.
They are out there, patience is the key.
Set a budget and work out what you really need, keep looking every day and even if one is insterstate, travel and drive back or take a gamble and truck it over and get an Aulroian to check it out.
Good luck.
