Hi everyone,
I have been told that you don't need diff locks in Defenders because they come standard with locking diffs. I thought only the centre diff locks (as per most real 4WDs) but have been told Defenders come with front and rear diff locks as standard. Is this correct?

They do come with Traction Control though,

When driven by some one who knows how to drive with it, it can be very effective.

Not the Tdi's.

Thanks everyone, that is what I suspected. I agree with the knowing how to drive. It makes a big difference when you put your wheels in the right place!

130 puma has no traction control, this is correct my mate has one. I think it's only the 110 wagons and dual cabs that get it and special order utes

AFAIK the 130s have no ABS so no ETC.

CDL only 130's get no electronic aids but then landies generally dont need them because most landy drivers can drive and dont follow the toyoitsisan off road technique of point it, mash the noisey pedal and hope for the best.

And in the new puma 110 single cab ute/tray you can have either a higher load OR etc/abs but not both.

it will be interesting to see what LRA do with all cars being sold in Australia requiring Stability Control at some point in 2011. South Australia is jumping the gun I think being the first state to bring it in April 2011.

The 130 might get ABS and Traction to work along side Stability. Stability strikes me as a wast of time in a all wheel drive vehicle. But then again it's something else for LR to add quirks to.
Factory diff locks, now that would be an option, something more sensible.

Victoria is first with that legislation, comes in start of 2011.
130 isn't a car, so won't be an issue.

Sorry BigJon, it does apply to all 4WD as well. I note from the Website (ESC vehicle status : VicRoads (http://vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/SafetyAndRules/SaferVehicles/BuyingASafeCar/ESCVehicleStatus.htm)) that the Defender is not on the Certified (of course not!) or Exempt list (interesting that the Patrol is exempt).
My reading is that if you want a new Defender in Victoria you have less than three days to get it or plan a move interstate! :o

The 130 is exempt from needing ABS (GVM too high?). I imagine it would be automatically exempted from the above rule on the same basis. The defender is not on that list, which seems to mean the application has not been processed - did you read this:
Please note that more models will be added to the table once certification applications have been processed.
If the patrol can get an exemption, then I am sure the 90/110 can as well.

AFAIK no civiilan defenders came with factory fitted difflocks either stock or as an option...

what do the switches look like? how do you know when they are engaged or disengaged?

The defenders are classed as a commercial vehicle which is why they dont BOTHER fitting child seat bolts for one thing, much to the frustration of numerous owners who want to carry their children around in it who are under 7! This is also how they will more than likely get away with not having ABS or stability on their wagon/D.cab.

I bet the last owner used factory switches to activate aftermarket lockers, some prefer/try to keep a factory look

Umm. Even if it was classed as a car it would not need abs or stability control.
But it would need air bags.

New rules in Vic for 2011, all new cars require stability control. It will be nationwide in 2012.

How on earth can one state have rules for something like this? Should be an ADR surely?
This of course will only apply to vehicles registered in Victoria.... how stupid is that? Oh, sorry, it is Victoria isn't it :D

The same way that states control vehicle registration...
I agree that it is ridiculous, but then I think that Australia shouldn't even have separate state governments.

The trouble with the defender is that it has a one tonne payload and the 130 has a 3500KG GVM as well as they can carry 5 people so they are not in a defined area of road legistation meaning that it's anybodies guess as to weather they need stability control or not. Pat

It is my undersatnding that the ADRs do not require airbags to be fitted to any motor vehicle in Australia (non-commercial or otherwise). However there are rules relating to accessories (such as bullbars) that require them not to interefere with the correct operation of fitted airbags.

Out of interest, here is a link to the Vic situation: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/SafetyAndRules/SaferVehicles/BuyingASafeCar/ESCmandatoryfrom1January2011.htm
