Hi Guys,
I just acquired a '64 S2A tray back. Have owned a S3-88 and a Defender tray pre-kids, but now back into LR's. This grey ghost is in poor condition, but amazingly, have found another S2A tray just down the road. I need to get rid of the other body asap, so will be taking as many parts of the second vehicle as time permits.
My question - what are the drivetrain parts that people would recommend that I keep. I plan to keep the diffs and axles, maybe prop shafts... and also keep instrument panel. Any other ideas for S2A?? Whatabout the carbie?
My fuel tank leaks near the bung, but I hope to solder around the plug.

the engine ancillaries ESP the startermotor
Id turf the propshafts  in favor of the whole front axle assmbley from wheel to wheel including the leaves and the shackles.
the gearbox wont give you problems, the tcase might but thats unlikely and a pain to remove but I would definately be grabbing the clutch slave and actuator mechanism.
radiator and its bulhead would also be worth getting along with the lights wiper motors and the indicator stalk unit.
the instrument panel and speedo cable would also probably be worth the effort.
windshield doors and the fuel tank and filler so that you can set yours up with twin tanks.
spare wheel holder if it has the tray mounted unit.

the only bits i'd throw away would be rotten beyond repair (very little except doortops gets to that stage) or could be proven to be busted and not worth repairing ...
the gearbox/transfer doesn't take up too much room and if you were clever it could be racked just above the engine and stashed in the corner of your garage/shed so minimising space used..
front axle complete along with the rear axle, if for no other reason to help out your local leafsprung buddy should he need a part sometime, i gave my laning/offroad buddy a pair of rear halfshafts and the diff when he snapped one and scrapped his diff to get him back on the road quick 
props take no space and as long as the splines are fair to good and require no more than a new UJ  they are worth repairing and having sat there as a quick replacement should you suddenly need one...
the complete bulkhead with all bits should be salvaged as just about all bulkhead parts are available should yours need rebuild which allows you to take your time and have it ready for installation before taking your landy to bits (or again it could help your buddy) 
i think you get the picture :D , me, i'd just tow the whole thing home and salvage anything i could out of it right down to the springs and shackles
my leafsprung landy is my daily driver so i can't have too many spares, i've a total of four of them, one broken for parts, one i'm rebuilding and one in the queue for rebuild as well as my daily :D

Seems like the best plan is to leave the chassis and bent guards and keep just about all else. Better get to work and make a little bit more space!!! ;)

Keep them too.  You never know when you might bend your guards worse then the other ones.  You could also wreck the chassis and keep things like outriggers, rear crossmember and what not.  Things can rust and it good to have a back up.  Also, You can help other people out with your marvellous supply of parts.
