G'day All, I'm in need of information re my T/case. Recently it dropped a bearing somewhere inside the T/case, anyway cutting a long story short, the T/case inside was damaged and the case replaced with one out of a 130 L/R, everything seemed fine until I drove it, it makes a horrible metal sound on overun.
The lads at Modern mtrs Dungog seem to think that the T/case (replacement jobbie) is the problem.
My old case is marked as such,
Cast no HRC 1472B
stamped EXP 14D007T (the double zeros could be 'OO' ??) the teeth on gears\output G/box 38
idler 59
out/put 34
My 110 is a Nov 1984, it was one of the 110's which were used by JRA at the time as press release vehicles for the Isuzu in the 110, does anyone have any information as to ??why the T/case would be different, or should I look around for a 1984/5 RR T/case, any help greatly appreciatted cheers Dennis:(

for starters you have one of the many lt230 Tcases and its probabley a T varient.

thereis very little difference between the various lt230s in what they will bolt up to and the 2 main differences you should be looking for is the CDL selector and the ratio of the Tcase. The Tcase in a defender has lower gearing than the one from a disco to offset the taller rubber that is standard in a deefer.

other than that the differences between them are internal and only cause concern when you are going to replace/rebuild one. ITs not a big issue you have the serial number for the case so just quote that when you order your parts and you should be sweet.

Check the ashcroft site to make sense of t-case seriel numbers.

As yours is an '84 it would have originally had an LT95. It now seems to have an LT230 - probably 1.003:1. However an LT230 from a 130 will be 1.4:1 - so much lower geared.

I have fitted a 1.21:1 case from a late model Disco 1 to mine. This is the "Q" model which is supposed to be quieter. Note that if you fit a disco t-case you need to change to a defender handbrake (county won't fit) and high and low range will be reversed on the lever.

FWIW the 1.2:1 RangeRover transfers will fit the county handbrake OK and have high and low in the same place... but they are a bit louder than the Q boxes.

1984 with a 5 speed??
I have a Bushdriver article of June '86 saying they are newly released ??
I know my early 85 was a 4 speed..
