Thought a few people would be interested - someone has been to the LR GTR site and downloaded the entire workshop manual and selling it on ebay for US$20...so it cost me AU$20 with no GST (sorry Mr Harvey!)

Automotive-Service-Manual items - Get great deals on items on eBay Stores! (http://stores.ebay.com/Automotive-Service-Manual)

Once purchased you get an email with the link to download the 430MB file.

Its presented as a .zip file with about 100 sub directories with each of the relevant areas containing description and operation, removal and adjustment details etc. It is the real manual although not presented as neatly as the RAVE system, ie the hyperlink don't jump from one place to the other and you need to open each pdf file individually.

The manual covers the 2005 LR3 2.7, 4.0 and 4.4 models....which will cover most vehicles for the next 4 years?

It does not seem to have the wiring / electrical information but certainly all the drive train, interior, engine wheels panels etc. $20 buck well spent for me!

cheers

Col.

Well done. And a bargain for the asking price.

Who owns the copyright. If downloaded I would assume this is still Land Rover.

So is the sale actually legal??

I'm guessing this is not a legal copy. If it was available from Land Rover, I for 1 would be happy to buy it. It's not. Since this is the only way I can get a copy of the workshop manual for my car, then so be it.

You can take out a 24 hour sub to the LR GTR. I did so to download all the P38A info they had.

Well I guess these days I am not surprised at the lack of moral fibre in the community, sadly it extends to here, too.

Those of us that pay to legitimately access these services are supporting the very people and organisations that spend a hell of a lot of time and expertise designing and producing these vehicles, like it or not, workshop manuals are part of it.

JC

(Edit:, apologies to those that PAY, I am having a soapbox moment about the degree of dishonesty I see all around, every day. :( )

Wasn't moralising in my above post - just interested whether the seller actually has the copyright because if they haven't they will not be around for long.

If organisations make documents available at a reasonable price then I have no trouble buying them, but when they with hold information or make it available at over the top prices I have no issue with acquiring from other sources.

I find it amazing that the D3 has been out for nearly 6 years and there still is not a freely available workshop manual available, either from Landrover or elsewhere.

The seller is breaching ebays policy on offering downloading of purchase. This was banned a couple of years ago, electronic media was not allowed.this seller is offering a download for the sum and extra if you want the Cd.
He is a software pirate

I forgot to say, a 24 hour sub isn't very expensive and you can download to your heart's content anything on the site.

I stand corrected! When I last checked the site (middle of last year), LR had withdrawn the ability for individuals to register for the service. Maybe they had a change of heart - or was it a temporary withdrawal? Whatever the reason, I've just registered - so it is back on

Free or not , legal or not , I'm of the opinion that it's not much use
really . Without a Canbus reader , an understanding of what's wrong
( many a Dealer is clueless here........ ) and a hoist/tools/parts to
fix an out of warranty problem , it's little more than novel ......
There's been free-access around for years , you know .........
A Merck Manual won't turn you into a Cardiologist ;=)

Seemed to have opened a moral can of worms. Having owned several Disco's and experienced the joys and untimely failures of the product I feel the need to have a copy of the manual as part of my traveling kit; as important as my recovery gear!- I recall a (failed) trip to Alice Springs where my D2 overheated to the point of blowing a top hose - taking the vehicle to a remote Victorian repair agent who looked at he vehicle scratching his head saying.."It's not a Toyota mate, won't be able to do much". The only saving grace was having the RAVE CD on my laptop, which allowed me and the mechanic to remove the radiator, repair and replace; we would never have been able to achieve this without the manual and the nearest "authorized" dealer was a $2500 flat tray tow away.

If LR were to have a decent support network in the regional areas of Australia where we like to travel with our vehicles I wouldn't worry...it's probably not an issue in the UK or Europe....our country is a bit bigger.

As mentioned in an earlier reply(s), if this manual is not authorized it will disappear pretty soon. I am also of the opinion that there needs to be a "freely" available manual for a 5 year old vehicle - Imagine if Toyota or Nissan did not provide this?

The company selling the manual on the internet seems to have a suit of manuals for a number of vehicles. While I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of the source of the LR manual, in my mind it is a god send and an extremely valuable asset to my continued driving confidence in my Discovery 3.

Cheers

Agree 100%, and I also agree it is high time these manuals were made available, on CD at least. I was just having a rant about the ease that ebay and online stores etc can undermine and promote the 'theft' of electronic media, made all the more popular due to people demanding it in the first place. I know it is supposedly banned from being sold online , but these things do have a habit of being sold in other ways, and undercover somewhat too. Look at the music industry for example:(

Nothing personal there Colin, but those are my views on the subject.
