1993 ute aircon

Hi all, im currently in th e process of doing up a 1993 single cab 200 tdi ute.

There is no air con fitted and i'm wondering has anyone retro fitted one of those units from ebay about $300 the box but no compressor. Appreciate any advice on alternatives (i know about the windows but i'm a sook :p) anyone fitted a roof mounted unit and cost. Dont want to spend 2 grand on a 4 grand ute.:)

I've been obtaining quotes of roof-top condenser/evap units (Rencool, Red Dot) and you will not buy one new for under $2k and that is not considering installation. Ceiling mounted evap only units are cheaper but still an exy proposition for a $4k ute (I've only priced Red Dot units).

Good luck, but I suspect you are best to spray some WD40 on your vent hinges - they are going to get a bit of use.

On a 4 gran ute I would consider two options.

1/ Chuck in some footwell air gushers ala 40 series tojo to get the heat out of the foot wells

1/ Put in a roof top gusher above driver and passenger

I plan on doing the foot well jobs once the fender is off the road for engine rebuild in the next few months. Im thinking of using marine pressed vents on the outside and marine swivelling adjusters on the inside to limit the water ingress on crossings.

If you put an AC in then you will have the windows up and wont taste the dust?
Besides engine driven AC compressors are for pumping air into tanks at 150psi not pushing cold water around ;)

It may be easier than you think... Aircon in Defenders seems to be recurring topic on the forum, and people seem to always revert back to the rooftop units, maybe this is the best way to go but they seem to me to be quite costly.
I have been looking a lot at the UK forums and discovered a few things. One idea would be to go to a wreckers and get the under bonnet bits you need from an old Discovery 200tdi. My little add on would then to have a look around for a different blower and install it under the drivers seat, get the plumbing to run along the chassis or something. You could then run the vents via a hose to the front of the cubby box and voila!
Now this sounds good in theory, I have one of the "standard but glad I don't sit in the passenger seat" aircons, but I am looking into doing this myself, then I can have vents for in the back too... (I have a 130DC)

Thanks for the input. A quick question on fitting, Will they work ok in the position you have yours fitted ( draining) also are they self contained or do you still need compressor and all other parts. Thanks BAz

Just looked up the site. Was that price for everything ? also part number would be appreciated.
