Topographical GPS

HI All

I don't if any one has asked this before but is there a car GPS out there that does Topographical maps for off road work as well as street stuff?

I currently have a version 2 tom tom and it only does road stuff

there are plenty of them, form the cheapies to the hema and vms units.
i have the VMS 500s excalent unit.

Thanks for that Phil I had a variety of GPS units over the years and have always thought they were incomplete as they only do half the job and as LR charges something like $5000 to add a GPS to a D4 I thought there had to be a better option.

This one uses topo maps if you install Oziexplorer.

I just use a handheld Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx both in-vehicle and when away from the truck. You get the best of both worlds then. This particular model handheld takes routable maps but does not give verbal directions but rather written ones. It does a lot more other stuff to. A great piece of kit for travelling on and off road and walkabout.

Over here in NZ we have a forum group called NZ Open GPS Map Project (http://nzopengps.org/)and they compile maps and put them up freely available online for all to download. Is there any Aust. equivalent?

Just did a quick search and to answer my own question above about an Aust equivalent to our Open GPS forum, see this link (http://www.gpsaustralia.net)for one in Aust.

The Garmin 1490T, at the moment just over $300.00 with lifetime maps, can also have topo maps added. Has bluetooth, a lifetime traffic alert subscription and safety cameras as well (why do they call them safety cameras?). There may be other comparable units.

Currently Garmin's topo maps are about $200.00, but aren't included in the lifetime upgrade (to my knowledge).
