G'day All!
I'm in the process of restoring a Series 1 86inch landi! Unfortunately the truck has been very abused. The guards are no good, and rear tube is completely abused. The chasis is in really good arder as well as the engine. Anyway my question is about the front axle!
I need to replace the half shaft bearings at the end on the axle housing, but the bearing sleve on the axle it self requires removing and replacing. Also the chrome swivel housing on both sides is also no good (seal rubbed through the chrome and into the cast steel).
Can anyone direct me to a good supplier/enthuiast who may have replacement parts? Anyone with a spare front axle for sale? This may be easier!

Where are you? Parts are likely to be available for the front axle from any of the specialist suppliers. (If it was an early 80", then there would be a lot more trouble finding them.

You can use any later series Land Rover chrome ball, not including the SIII Stage 1.
There is a tolerance fit collar retaining the bearing, you need to press that one off or crack it with a cold chizel and heavy hammer over an anvil, then slide it off. I would try Land Vehicle Spares at Silverdale NSW or All Four X 4 at Kotara (newcastle) NSW for the parts. All four X 4 often has kits for hubs, swivels etc.

I'm in Tamworth NSW, that can be a problem, as many Landrover owners seem to live further south!

Both LVS and All Four X 4 are happy to post. Both very reliable.

I'll go along with Diana on this - received panhard rod bushes from All four x 4 yesterday, ordered Friday by phone. Never had problems with them. LVS are also good. There are others, but these are perhaps the most suitable for you. I live in a more out of the way part of NSW than you do. There is a dealer in Dubbo, only 60km away, but I have yet to find a part I want that they stock, and my experience is that the places suggested can supply parts quicker, cheaper and more accurately than the dealer!

I have disassembled front axles and hubs of two 86s that don't seem to have this retaining collar (part 244151) fitted.

In both cases, I was able to withdraw the half shaft completely with the chrome swivel pin bearing housing still attached to the axle casing.

The workshop manual and comment above suggest this should not be possible. Bearings, UJ etc all seem to be fine.

Is this common?

Ok you can all relax - I've worked it out an there is no problem, just so much grease I can't see what's going on.
As you were
