I have just scored a new Samsung Galaxy phone from work and so far I'm a happy chappie.
What I would like to do is load up an Android app that uses offline maps (the Galaxy supports 32GB storage cards) for when I travel. Offline to avoid the data charges from online (Google Maps etc).
The Android App Market lists a few mapping applications, so rather than trial and error, can I learn from the experience of others?
Q: Does anyone recommend a Android Mapping App?

Yep you can DL the Alpha version here OziExplorer GPS Tracking Software for Mobile Devices running Android (http://www.oziexplorer3.com/android/oziexplorer_android.html)
I would/will get it when it goes to beta, hopefully a bit more stable then.

I have installed the mapdroid app and downloaded a few of their offline maps, seems to be OK. Doesn't do navigation, but tells you where you are on the map, which is what I was looking for really.
Idea is that I load the maps for where I am going (example Hong Kong) then knowing where I need to go (checking on a real map or Google first) this is my paper map replacement on my phone.
Will update once I have used it a bit.
Will also be looking at OziExplorer once it gets released for a Android tablet I want to add to my D3.

Ndrive works very well. Pretty much like a standard GPS application. NDrive | Products | NDrive for Android (Download) (http://www.ndriveweb.com/products/product/96/)

CoPilot is very good and is my standard 'go to' nav system when I'm out of data range - it's about $50. Google nav/maps uses very little data is definitely my main choice. There's a few others around but not in the same league as CoPilot from the ones I've tried. I've got 3 installed currently (not counting google nav/maps) - MotoNav, NavDroid and CoPilot.

Still using mapdroid but have also found that the latest version of Google Maps allows you to cache up a fair bit of map data. So if you plan where you are going to be you can preload Google Map data as well.

just found androzic (http://code.google.com/p/androzic/) , an Android app that uses oziexplorer maps
Got this and its very very capable....
does everything that oziCE does and imports loads of various route/nav datas.
my only complaint about it is if you slide off of the map you are on for one reason or another it drops you back to the next lower resolution map rather than loading the next map in series.

great information on this. Does Androzic allow for use of maps when out in the bush with no signal? It looks like a great program but how does it function when its not able to live-update from a carrier signal?

yep, IVe got all of australia loaded in under 2gb at the 1:250K level which is good enough for most vehicle based stuff providing you plan your routes on a larger screen then upload them to the GPS.
Im using the same maps as Ive been using for the last 3 years but am not having the problem of the maps are not overlaid correctly.

Yeah I use Androzic on the Galaxy S too, its pretty nice.
I've also had the problem with the map joints, not that often though.
Maps can be sourced here if your interested - http://maps.festy.org/
It does work without mobile signal, just needs GPS obviously.

also have a look at a program called Aura by Sygic it uses TomTom mapping and is very fast and accurate on my HTC Desire HD.
A very nice feature is simulated 3D topography which worked nicely up north during the cyclone
another app for android is Ulysses Gizmos which gives you the following gadgets in on smart little app.
- Compass; Speedometer; GPS status; Bubble level; Clinometer; Magnetometer; Map view
