View Full Version : My Disco rolled

Well, two months after I bought it....it's a write off.
Was helping a mate get his L plate hours up on the Mitchell Hwy. Coming out of a long sweeping left hander he drifted a bit across the centre of the road, we both saw an oncoming semi (in it's lane), we both realised we'd hit it.
My made swerved left (I knew as I saw how hard he turned that we'd had it), then overcorrected to the right (knew we'd really had it), the Disco hit a 4 foot deep 8 foot wide ditch on the opposite side of the road, did a wheels to roof roll.
I said, 'I'm alive, you OK' - he said 'yep'. We undid our seat belts, fell onto the roof, I kicked the windscreen out & we both crawled out.
Only injuries are glass cuts.
Highly recommend Discovery 2 as a vehicle to crash in.
Comprehensive insurance with NRMA - $2200 excess, am hoping that 'market value' means close to the amount I paid for it 2 months ago.
One less Platinum edition TD5 Auto Discovery 2 on the road.
Wreck will be auctioned in Newcastle (don't know when).Perfect spare wheel & tire. at least 2 rims should be fine. Engine probably A'OK. Someone in the area might want to bid on it.
Spent a year looking for this vehicle....hugely bummed, my wife is bummed, my 2 year old is very disappointed, keeps asking 'big car?'
That said,
Any crash you walk away from is a good one,
We haven't lost as much as those poor families in QLD.

Yeah, I'd rather have rolled at 80kph than hit the Semi at 180!

The best outcome from this is that you and your mate are alive and intact, sucks that he wrote off your pride and joy, but you both walked away from it.
Hope you get back on all fours quickly bud!

As said bellow you guys are VERY lucky to get out of that with such little injuries! (I just hope whiplash etc doesn't give you to much grief!) :(
But it is a sad sight to see someones pride and joy in such a state. :(

glad to hear your both ok.that is the main thing. in november i rolled the defender i had my girlfriend in the passenger seat the 2nd time we had been together in 4 months.considering where the car went and the speed involved the amount of damge to the car and us was not to bad at all. it had quite alot of panel damage and the chassis bent but where it went you wouldnt be able to drive in low.it rolled twice and landed on its wheels and was able to drive home very slowly.i really recommend the defender as far as safety goes.i hope you got your money back or at least most of it.

Glad you walked away from it! Where did it happen?
crash
14th January 2011, 03:51 PM
Glad to hear all is okay.
When the vehicle ends up on the roof, majority of neck injuries are caused by people undoing the seatbelt and falling onto their head than what occurs in the actual accident.

Have they offered you a buy back? Just thinking you might be able to get your money back plus some as well as keep the bits you want to.
I'd put in an order from what I can see, help you get back on the road.

Glad to hear you a re ok, bad luck about the car although it could have been worse all round.
I have a platnium, know what you mean about it being a sad loss.
If you buy it back I need a few bits if you are wrecking it.

Thank guys,
Happened on the Mitchell Hwy about 30km south of Wellington. 5 1/2 hours into a 6 1/2 hour trip.
So...had a call from my mechanic today (name withheld so no one else can get in on this potential deal)...he has some other customers, and...
If B buys A's car, then C might by B's car, which means I'd be knocking on C's door with a pile of money...
And I might just end up with a car better than the one now rolled...
NRMA now says auction in Smithfield (Sydney). Yep. Heaps of good parts. Will try to get the car myself.

Lol, it shrunk in the wash....
Crash pics looked pretty hairy, lucky to get out with very minimal damage to oneself. And extremely lucky to not hit the semi.
The A pillars on discos are very very small. I have often wondered about their strength in a roll. I don't know how hard you hit on the front of the roof but the A pillars seem pretty squashed. But yes, there is plenty of head room in discos so that is one thing in their favour.

Certainly hope your insurance company look after you and the replacement vehicle is all you hope for.

Glad you came out ok.
How old is your stunt car driving mate??
Has he learnt anything from the accident such as entry speeds into bends, truck avoidence at speed, etc that will stand him in good stead during his stunt driving career? ;)
Why don't you do yourself a favour and buy a good manual disco heaps nicer to drive ...but then I cant stand Auto bang boxes.

Hey lardy,
He's 19 (going on 40 after the crash).
Yep, I reckon he's learnt a lot. Esp not to do vigorous wheel turning at speed in a high centre of gravity car.
Used to love manuals & think I'd only ever buy manual, but my wife is an auto only girl, and I've discovered an auto box leaves a hand free to....
a) reach behind the seat to pick up whatever my boy dropped so he'll stop shouting
b) reach back with a bottle of milk or dummy to stop my youngest screaming
c) hold my wife's hand while driving - which is nice
The only flaw to the above is the indicator stalk is on the left.

Dont you mean 7 seat? I dont think I have ever seen a 7 door disco. Well if you count the bonnet and the fuel cap then I suppose you could say its a 7 door. Hell with the glove box and the centre console it could be a 9 door :D

Wow not good at all, as others have stated, your walking AND alive that's the important thing.
Yes market value means price you would pay to replace the vehicle if buying from a yard.

Market value is what the insurance company says a vehicle of that age and Km's is worth isnt it? Dealers often ask prices which are alot higher than what an insurance company says its worth.

Mate, the biggest killer in any 4WD accident is when the wheels point to the sky. That's why they have worked so hard trying to create stabilisation systems like the D4's DSC.
You're very lucky boys...which is great. Shame about the car though.
Cheers.

surviving that virtually unscathed is just one more reason to drive a landrover. good luck with your insurance. I spent 5 months looking for my D2 and 3 months later a camry tried to turn right from the left hand lane of a roundabout with me going straight on in the right lane. 40kmh, impact point his drivers front wheel my pas front and all four wheels off the ground landing on one wheel on the kerb, bent diff and chassis. insured for market value and RACQ tried to give me 9 grand despite the fact that at the time you could not but an equivalent one for under 17, i had to fight them to end up getting 11 for it. their idea of market value is what a dealer could buy one for unregd unroadworthy and uninsured, also they said it did not matter mine was an ES their value was on a base model, needles to say my replacement a p38 RR is now insured for agreed value.
good luck
mick
