View Full Version : 101 Wheel Studs

I have been slowly doing some work on my 101 over the past few months and have had one of the front wheels off to gain access to the front and side of the engine.

I went to put the wheel on today and was surprised that one of the wheel nuts would not tension up and was showing a lot more wheel stud thread. On taking the wheel back off the wheel nut and stud just fell out. The wheel stud itself had not broken through but the collar at one end that holds it in the wheel hub flange was gone allowing the stud to pull through. Looking at it there was fresh fracture on a small section but the rest had broken long ago. Tightening the wheel nut had broken the last bit. You can see the bright and dark metal in the pic.

So does anyone know if a wheel stud from another landie will fit. According to the 101 parts manual, the stud is unique to the 101 but it has been wrong before. Unfortunately the specifications are not listed. However the stud has an overall length of 44mm including the retaining collar and it is 15.8mm in diameter - I do not know what the thread is. The wheel nut takes a 27mm socket.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

Garry

I have one like that on the 2A and had several like that on the Series 1 I used to own. The replacements I purchased (for the Series 1) had flats on the back to stop them pulling through.

Best port of call would be AJs.
I can source one new via size matching if you give me the sample or very detailed dimensions.
The problem is I most likely wouldnt be able to source a wheel stud in a hurry and I it most likely cost a hell of alot more to get it though my sources than AJs
I know AJ was wreaking a 101 for parts.
A local engineering company would have no problems making one, is just that time and cost thing again.
I know the wheel hub on the 101 is different from any other Landrover due to the six stud pattern and Nato pitch circle dia and my guess is the studs are different too.
I know landrover over the years have used different size threads and dia for the studs especially during the metric change over.
Be very careful if you think a standard series Landrover type wheel stud will interchange.

AFAIK the studs are the same on the 101s as they are on the series II/III

Nah - that one of Garrys is splined. I distinctly remember my Series 1 had a splined stud.

My Series 2a has thread both ends - like this:

Series 1 studs are much smaller than the 101s. I was hoping something like a County or Defender stud would be the same.

Been away for a couple of weeks and now back looking at this - the Series III parts manual has the same part number for the wheel stud as the 101 stud.

Thanks to Blknight.aus for the lead.

Cheers
