Hi, finding I'm having fairly high oil usage in my 93 Defender. Around 1.5litre per 5000k's. It only has 140,000k's on it and always been well maintained. It smokes on start but apparently all do. Doesn't blow smoke driving along and definitely no oil in water or vice versa. Starts first pop and doesn't run on etc. In fact there doesn't appear to be any detriment causing or resulting from the oil. I do a lot of highway driving which does seem to contribute to higher usage than normal in these engines.

I'm not overly worried because apparently some used a lot of oil from new and some didn't from what I read. Just wondering if I'm using the right oil or should be using something else. Presently using Caltex 15W40 Delo 500
Is there a particular type / brand of oil that is best?

Has anyone had similar usage from there 200?

i have a 300tdi and use prolube maxi-fleet, however my next 20L drum will be ultra-fleet i believe

how much on the dip stick is 1.5 litres? if its between the lines i wouldn't be overly worried

Although mine is a 300tdi and does not use any oil, I use Penrite 5/40 as I found with 5k km oil changes it purrs and the proof was in the oil pressure my mates Disco of same vintage shows.

Its very steady when hot, pressure builds up very quickly and not too expensive.

Just my experience.

1.5 ltr/5000k's seems alot-my 300tdi uses bugger all @ 10k changes, not losing it through rear seal or leaking oil lines?

I park it on a concrete driveway and no leaks at all. Nothing that would indicate oil leaks or excessive oil usage at all (except the oil usage :-)

I had a look around the Turbo and didn't see oil splattered everywhere. I haven't been very diligent in letting the turbo run for a minute or so before shutting off. Would that make any difference?

It's weird?

FWIW Delo 400 is one of the best oils on the market.

I'd be popping the rocker cover off and checking the valve stem seals, I've found them to float or not be pushed down on the valve guides, allowing a fair bit of oil down the stems.

In my experience 3 stem seals floating will allow roughly 600ml/10,000km down the guides.

I use Penrite HPR Diesel 15 and mine doesn't use hardly any and I change it about every 7000km. As stated the 200Tdi does produce smoke on start up as they are designed to start anywhere in the world. 140,000kms is not a lot on a diesel as mine has done over 300,000kms. A diesel if looked after should go at least 450,000 kms.

There may be a small amount of oil getting past the piston rings, but a minor amount does the oil filler shows signs of presure when you have it open.

if there are no leaks then it must be burning the oil.

thanks Mark
