Thinking a Tow Bar mounted spare wheel carrier and jerry can carrier would be the go for my D4. Does anyone make one?

They would have to be designed to swing away and be long enough to swing away from the rear door, I'd hate to have to take it off just to open the rear door, that would be a pain in the arse.

I made one for my D2 but probably wont for the D4 because there's nothing to stop the wheel from moving about. Apart from rattling, the movement causes the tongue and receiver to wear as there's no way to lock the two together unless it can also be satisfactorily attached to the recovery point as well. The sudden stop from having moved also places a lot of strain on its construction. Non-LR hitches often have a bolt that can be tighened to prevent movement. I ended-up strapping the D2's 2nd spare to the 1st spare but was concerned about damaging the door.
A proper mount is rigid and the wheel is pressed against the mount to prevent movement.

Hi fatnold,
Not to sure about this one, I would think it would depend on what type of driving you do, subjecting such a set up to corrugations with additional weight that far out beyond the rear bumper, you would have to have a well designed and strong set up. Plus the standard D3 hitch doesn't look like it would really take well to such loadings. I've got the Kaymar carrier and I have recently come back from a trip which had some corrugations, looking out of the back window whilst travelling its surprising that everything survived. The steel and structural design that has gone into this it has to be really strong to survive. If you find one good luck, personally I haven't seen one.

I have seen two types which might interest you today! One straight on the the exisiting bar from Oppersite Lock (http://www.oppositelock.com.au/index.php?action=prodcatalogue&form_name=view&category_id=59&pageID=10062&sectionID=0) and another at Kaymar (http://www.kaymar.com.au/vehicles/landrover/discovery4.php)

The Kaymar one replaces the plastic rear bar with steel. Saw it this moring when getting rid of my tow plough:) with a Mitch hi rise hitch (http://store.mitchellbros.com.au/discovery-3-4-and-rrs/discovery-3-tow-hitch)
