The main message screen on the dash has blacked out.
Is this a bulb failure, fuse? or something else. Can read very faintly upon very close inspection.

Did it black out all at once?
I'm sure there's 2 backlight globes in there - my left side blacks out at times but comes good after a while.

If it failed all at once then it might not be a globe issue.

It was always dim on one side but now its totally dim.
and I suppose to replace the bulb requires the removal of the dash and half the internals of the car and its best to plan a week off work to attempt??? Funny it doesnt display that there is a fault in the message display:cool:

The three bulbs in the lower centre illuminate the message centre.

Thanks for the clarification, I suspected as such. Are the new bulbs available from repco or supercheap or are they something one needs to source from some obscure bulb distributor...any likely stockist advise would be appreciated.

The bulbs are available at Supercheap at about $5.00 for 2. The ones I bought were only 2 watt.

The one you want for the Message Centre are 1.2 watt wedge base bulbs. My local Woolworths servo has them. They are as common as muck in Australia. The link Willem gave shows the type of bulb.

I was going to try white LEDs in mine one day. The next time I pull the dash perhaps.

In the photo above, the 3 watt bulbs are for the instrument panel backlighting.

Have been considering that myself, as the rest of the interior lights have been changed over to LED's. Wonder how they will cope with dimming?

They should dim OK...like the interior lights;) There have been posts in other places re. changing the colour of the instrument panel lighting to "red" or "white" ...whatever...
cheers

I have just done the job myself. Replaced all three globes behind the display after the display finally blacked out altogether. Straightforward job, using the instructions on the link to RangeRovers.net. Took about 2 hours overall.

I bought two globes at Supercheap for $6.70, then had to get some more after hours and bought two more at the local APCO servo for $2.85. So Supercheap isn't! :(

Willem, did you fit LEDs or incandescent globes? I have my dash out at the moment and it could be a good time to try LEDs.

Just ordinary incandescents. Time prevents me from experimenting too much.

Thanks for the Rangerovers.net page that you did, BTW. Made life a lot easier.
