A rewarding day spent last Friday chasing rainbows - six released, four kept for a satisfying feed.

Nice trout...
We brought home 6 trout on Sunday too. They were a little more orange in colour and all had uncanny 7mm holes through their heads.
Cant recall there being too much grass in the vicinity either.

Any photos Steve, I have almost forgotten what a trout looks like it's been that long since I have been out. I think the trailer has square wheels by now.Weather bureau reckons there is gonna be a tropical low develop up your way by Saturday.

Sorry for the highjacking Roger,

Brian we have had amazing weather since mid Novemeber, We did an Osprey trip last week of Nov and since then I would say the days over 15kn would be less than 10.
Whilst Brissie and the SE was getting snotted up here we had calm weather. I have put 100 hours on the engine since Novemeber 20.

I see the predicted spinner off of Cairns, chances are it will amount to nought but time will tell.

Got a 95cm long nose emperor on Sat night - might be able to wrangle up a piccy of that one. No pics of the trout, but I could take a quick shot of the fish freezer ATM fully stocked for the weather to go bad.

Fresh liver is good stuff for catching trout. I knew some fellows who were working on the Snowy scheme who reckoned the best gear to get trout in the Snowy area was the noisy bait. They were Eastern European dp's who regarded trout as an inferior eating fish, but which could handily be converted into alcohol at the mountain pubs by selling them to failed fly fishermen.

Nice trout. What fly were you using and what weight fly rod was it?

Pushing my luck - whereabouts did you catch them?

I have a dam at my farm in Bathurst which I stocked last year nd the yar befoe with rainbows and I have a ball catchuing them on size 16 and 18 dry flies such s Bluebottles and CDC dun patterns that I tie.

Nothing like seeing them rise and sip the fly off the surface

Nice work Roger, great trout...

But I do have a quick question though?

I had to go to Armidale last week (from Coffs) and past a lot of small to middling streams in the process (either side of Ebor).
Are these streams worth a cast or two? They certainly look the goods but I have never chased trout in these areas and was wondering if access is an issue or should I be looking in the national parks instead?

Cheers, Matt.

By the way, how well do they cook up? I've been mostly a saltwater fisho thus far.

Hi Mate,

Can't comment on all except the cooking part....they would be superb.

I used to go fishing with my old man in Scotland...Browns, Loch Leven's and Rainbows, though not the size you get here in Oz. Always great eating.

In Australia, I was camping at Barrington Tops many years ago and caught some trout there, had them for breakfast the next morning. Just a bit of butter in a pan.....nothing like it.

Cheers,

Kev.

Thanks for the info Kev, will have to give them a try when I get some fishing locales sorted.
My fishing gear is somewhat depleted at the moment though, my young bloke put my light spin outfit down whilst plastic fishing offshore in favour of some chips, and it got dragged into the drink before I had a chance to dive for it. A nice way to rid myself of $600.

Then I was out on the weekend and got spooled by a spanish mackerel on my 30lb heavy plastic outfit due to a double hookup and inability to give chase due to fishing by myself. Another $90 in braid.

I need a second job.

No worries mate.

They don't taste a lot like other types of fish, or at least I don't think so. If you've had pan fried or BBQ'd salmon steak, it's quite similar but the trout tends to be a bit more subtle. You can season with salt, peppers or garlic, for a bit of extra flavour.

Geez, you're having a bad run on the tackle. :(

When I was a kid growning up, there wasn't a lot of money around in my family but I finally got a brand new rod. First time out with it on a Loch in Scotland, with my Dad and a mate of his, in an old row boat, my hands were so cold, I fumbled putting the rod together.....plonk.....top section in the drink. I was heart broken....:(

Fortunately I can afford new gear these days...:)
