Pedders do a 50mm lift for the D3 S coiler as does Dobinsons.

Mine has King coils, 50mm lift and the original shocks. Does anyone have new shocks, what type, length, do you get more travel with longer shocks and when do you know the current shocks are worn, what signs?

Dobinsons supply struts that are a little longer as well as a higher rate spring, I have them on my D3S.
The ride quailty suffers but you can't get have everything everytime.

There was a D3 coiler getting around with a 3" Pedders lift (65mm not quite 3") from memory he had to have longer shocks/struts fitted, for the life of I can't remember the forum he was on, Discoweb, Expadition Portals, it was an American, but he was in OZ, Sydney I think.

Wonder what the stresses are on the CVs etc running at that angle constantly.

Probably the same as other vehicles with the same lift I would imagine, guess it's a risk you take if you want extra clearence, but I would say 50mm would be enough for 95% of places the average tourer goes.

Based on my own observations (D3 with Dobinsons springs/struts) I would say not much different from a standard D3. The angles on the shafts are not much different from what they were standard and are less than those of my wifes FWD Renault. I don't think 65mm will bother the D3.
However if doing the spring thing again I would stick with the longer struts, paired with a custom set of longer springs with a rate closer to the standard coils. I don't tow anything heavy or overload on gear so could trade off some rate for ride comfoft.

Yes Air Suspension gives a different result, at a different price both initially and over time.
If I was setting up a towing/tourer, Air would win, same for if I had only one vehicle to drive, but I don't.
I would rather have air, but instead I have been spending the difference in purchase price (D3 coilers can be picked up fairly economically) on other stuff like a new fridge and a set of muddies.
My daily drive is no magic carpet ride, so by comparison a few kg/mm increase in rate for the D3 was hardly a concern.

Have you guys got any photos of the 3D S with the lift in and woul you be able to put coil spacers in with the lift to get more hight. It is to low and is draging its ass in the sand, I need to get it higher.

I also have the King Springs fitted with the OEM struts. They lift the D3 to about off-road height for the air-sprung D3s.
I'm very pleased with them and haven't noticed any difficulties with the oem struts.
Best Wishes,
Peter

You can, but you'd have to be aware of the angles your (8) CV joints would then be operating at - no sudden power application, full lock in reverse etc. At your own risk ..... Your wheels would also be seriously out of alignment and need re-setting. Have you considered larger tyres - say 265/70R17?

Hi I have had the Dobinson struts and coils fitted after originally having Pedders springs (40mm Lift) on my D3 S TDV6. the Dobinsons added another 25-30mm and have been fantastic to tour with. My exhausts are nearly completely crushed from before but don't hit anymore. The ride is a little firmer but still great. I also upsized to 245/70/17 Cooper ST and that added a further 14mm. Can't speak highly enough of the performance when touring.

Good point, on the Dobinsons kit you are then on the limit of available adjustment for front Camber. So any further lift (spacers or coils) will need further suspension modifications, not just adjustments.
265/70/17 tyres would be the next step.
As far as I know that does mean accepting some rubbing and the need to flatten out a seam or 2, as well as accepting the taller gearing and negative impact on fuel consumption.

As far as I know they only rub in on road height so that should not affect a lifted coiler.
There may be some rubbing on front left inner guard liner at on road height however you can zip tie the guard liner back approx 25 mm to the chassis & there should be no problem.
There was some talk of cars with rear air rubbing in the rear wheel wells however again I do not think this will affect a coiler.
The speedo will be out approx 3km/h at 100km/h according to GPS, this is because there is usually some factory calibration toward indicating higher speed than actually travelling.

Chuck

Pedders did mine for about $1000. Only the springs needed. Rides and handles well:)
