Well, I've done it.........finally :clap2:

A Canon EOS 60D coupled with the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8. Most of the blurb that I chose to read suggested this is a brilliant setup :p

The kit is supplimented with a Manfrotto monopod which I recieved for Christmas and a family inherited 28-105mm USM.

Here is the last pic which I will ever take with the Canon S5is. It has become the wife's camera or if I decide to use it as backup

I'm sure you will be pleased with it, though I suspect the lens may prove a little soft.

I have read a few reviews which state this and yesterdays little exercise confirms most of it. I have to be careful at F/2.8 at 17mm but most of this can be eliminated by moving to F/4 or about 25mm.

Congrats on the purchase

If you have a good copy then this Tamaron model is excellent.
Test it and if it is soft ask for a replacement.

Your next lens in the list have to be the awesome Canon 300mm f/4 IS and then get the birds photography bug ;)

There are also two versions of this lens.

The latest version has VC which is Vibration Compensation. All the reviews showed that this lens has IQ problems(soft, etc) and was no match for the non VC version.

Most people sacrificed the VC and went for the earlier non VC. It is less expensive and the potential IQ is so much better.

G'day,

what are the results when using the 28-105? I have one of these and I am looking forward to buying a 550D.

Its not as exciting as the Tamron, but what else do you expect. My rough estimate would be about 15 years, if not longer, between the two of lens development.

Here is one of the lens review sites that gives an indication of how good/bad it is.
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - Review / Test Report - Sample Images & Verdict (http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/189-canon-ef-28-105mm-f35-45-usm-test-report--review'start=2)

My version is the Mark II so it has the the 7 blade aperture. According to some review sites this was about the best it can get and went downhill from there as Canon seemed to cut this lens down.

Im sure with a little care and practice you could get decent photos out of it.

Here is a sample image...bear in mind I had left the polarizing filter on :oops2:
