good day to u all

i have a discovery 3;

the transmission case ceased on it @ 110000ks

the car has not been off road and has been serviced

it was the sealed case

i am told this is very rare

can any one my advise if this is so and was there a vehicle recall

It has become quite well-known that the oil needs to be changed at around 80,000 Kms. If the gbox is still in the vehicle and depending on the fault, it may be appropriate to change the oil and if there's a significant improvement, change the oil again. A significant quantity of old oil remains when drained.

Hi Gordon,
I would agree that having a transmission seize at 110,000km is rare. There is no recall available for the transmission. I believe there are Teechnical Service Bulletins for them - if the owner requests them. However these only change behaviour of changes, etc, rather than preventing it from seizing.

That's what I assumed. Transmission case == transmission unit... and a case of holiday spelling. :D

You have to read it a couple of times !
Is "Transmission case" a Transmission or Gearbox , or is it a Tranfer case ?
Does "ceased" mean stopped or seized ?
I wonder what were the symptoms that lead to this event ? (whatever that was !)
Perhaps it was the case of the sealed case,case ! Interesting !!

MLR Sth Melb advised and undertook transmission case service and underpan replacement at my ~ 98,000 service. I had no problem at that time apart from occasional less-than-perfect gear changes. I presume they knew!

Is it just senility setting in early in my case, or are posts just getting harder to understand :confused::confused:

Stewmair and gordon007: I think I can vaguely understand you, but it is so easy to misinterpret when your sentences don't make sense!

Stewmair: What did the dealer know?? How do you service a transmission case???

Not your "case" as well ! Spend Australia Day changing your "case"
fluids ( VB will do , but don't forget a double flush ) as all will be
clear when you wake up Gordon .........;)

There's a great big thing under there what is meant not to be serviced. They took the permanent pan off it, serviced it and replaced the pan with one that allows future servicing. They said there was a risk of it dying if not done at about 100,000 km.

@ stewmair - I thought LRA policy was that parts supplied must be genuine LR. On my D3 the ZF gearbox had 'Type A' plastic pan with inbuilt filter. The pan you had replaced (by the dealer) sounds like the metal one ('Type B', that Ford Australia had for their ZF-6HP26 gearbox as fitted to some Falcon and Territory models).

As I tow 2.5T caravan regularly, I had the oil in the gearbox "double-flushed" at approx. 80 000k; sure it is expensive but well worthwhile if you want the gearbox to last the distance. I suppose if you did normal driving with mostly highway driving then keeping the 'box "sealed for life" would be the easy option.

Although Shell do sell a suitable product, it would be advisable to use ZF's own 'LifeGuardFluid 6' as it was designed for the transmission. The same oil is recommended for the D4's ZF-6HP28. Bloody expensive stuff though.

Hey gordon007 - Land Rover say the transmission is "sealed for life" - and transmission oil is scheduled to be replaced at the 150,000km service. I would then argue that if it seized (ceased to exist?) at 110,000km... it should be replaced gratis, by LR. :twisted:

I am sure MLR would go outside policy (after warranty period) if it was the right thing to do.
