Hey forummers!
I'm so excited so I couldnt wait until Thursday to spill the beans on my new tyres!
I've got a set of 6 BFG KM2 mud terrains going on my Rangie (obviously two of those will be spares) on Thursday!! I can't wait to head out on Saturday to try them out! I settled for 255/70/16's as the next size up is a 265/75 and I didnt want to chance rubbing guards, even though i'm quietly disappointed that I didnt choose them over the 255's.
I'll put up pics and links to videos of the P38 in action with her new boots on Saturday (pics will probably be Thursday).
Feel free to comment on size/tyre choice in the meantime! I'm so impatient - I want my tyres now ha ha!
Cheers

Well at least you can feel confident that they won't rub anywhere at that size. BFG's are a great choice - I'm running the BFG TA's on mine - officially their AT type but still pretty chunky. Been very happy with mine so far, first time I've stepped away from Coopers.

Purchased a set of Sivlerstone A/T's a few months back and are Faaaantastic, considering that i went off-roading previously with a set of korean road tyres.

Here are the pics of my new tyres! I'll be taking them offroad this weekend for some dirty shots! And yes - they just scrub the mudflaps in normal height (only just noticeable). They are 255/70/16.

Those front mudflaps are fairly easy to remove - had to on mine or I was going to lose them I'm sure with the 265/70 bfg's I'm running. Yours look great, add a nice aggresive look and I reckon the white wall lettering is schmick

They look great. Are they noisy on road? My Dad has a set of 265/75 16 on his 100 Series and they hum a lot.
By comparison I recently got a set of 245/75 16 Maxxis Bighorns and they are a lot quieter on road. How much were the BFGs?

Yeah if i find they rub under articulation i'll rip off the mudflaps, its only a light scrape for now, i can deal with it!
They are just as noisey as my previous tyres (H/T's), but you notice the noise more with the windows down. Keeping in mind they only have about 40km on them, i'm sure they will quieten up a bit!
No comment on the price (I know people in the tyre industry)!

My tough track tyres are Good Year Wrangler MTR's in 245/75/16
While they are a bit noisy on smooth bitumen, they are tops in mud and stones with very strong walls but not so good in sand, even at lower pressure.(15psi)
On my other wheels I have Toyo open country AT's in 255/65/16. These are very good on road, on gravel and in the wet. Off road they are OK but the sidewalls bulge a bit much for comfort, looking vulnerable for rocks. The reason for 2 sets is so the Wranglers dont wear out too quick driving on bitumen, where they are a bit of a waste. Change over time is about 30 minutes using a small trolley jack.

I like the Goodyear Wrangler MTR's too - very nice tyre! That was my second preference over the BFG's!
I'd love to have two sets of wheels, but at the moment the budget is a bit thin! I might get a set of mags later down the track if I find the M/T's are wearing too quickly though!

Now you have the nice flash rubber why not remove the ( in my opinion) silly lower spoiler to show them off from the front.
One good thing about your size choice is the spare should fit the well.

if you find with the new tyres and enthusiasm you start rubbing your bumper in tricky spots they don't look to bad trimmed a little bit higher. I'm running 265/75/16 764 bighorns and they scrub like hell on the rear and the sills on the front have been trimmed back 2 1/2 inches to stop them scrubbing.

Cheers wayne! I did the exact same thing with my other P38, I will be removing the lip spoiler before the weekend! For such a small bit of plastic it was hard to remove last time, hope its a tad easier this time!
And unfortunately for me, the spare does not fit in the well! Even deflated its still too big! Maybe when I rotate them in a few thousand k's I might be lucky!
Not too keen to trim guards as yet! When the next set of tyres come, they'll be 33's and I think I might do some trimming then!

it depends on how tall the 33's actually measure as to what you have to trim. a mate of mine was running 33/11.5/15 nexens and my 265/75/16 are taller. on the back you wont have to trim anything either run longer bump stops or put up with the scrubbing and on the front you might have to trim the sills back. as for the trimming process most people do the trimming themselves.

Good luck... I run 33" Maxxxis Bighorns with a 2" suspension lift and I still get scrubbing at the front in access mode.
Stock P38's run 29" OD tyres so you are wanting to run 2" bigger radius and not get scrubbing? You will need to trim a lot unless you always keep the car at high EAS mode.

If you want the tyres for mud you can always drop the width, ie 7" rims and run thinner tyres.
Most of the testing as been done for you. :)

Yes. The car had 18" hurricanes which I think are the nicest looking on a P38.
These Disco 2 rims look pretty similar and obviously fit, Nuts are the same.

What if I get a 3 or 4 inch coil conversion or reset the standard eas to a higher setting???

Nooooo! If you're seriously considering a coil conversion, a better idea is to sell the P38 to someone who appreciates the EAS and buy yourself a Disco 2 (non SLS) or Defender :wasntme:
or reset the standard eas to a higher setting???
Certainly possible... with stock air springs, I'd go no more than 20-30mm taller than EAS High mode. If you replace them with Gen III air springs maybe 50mm. Remember, you want to have some travel in the springs to assist in articulation.
When I am playing offroad, I like to keep my P38 in standard EAS height to allow for articulation. High mode is for clearing obstacles and water crossing.
See my earlier post... I do run 33"s but I have a 50mm suspension lift... so does Range Rover Rogue.
The Hard Range 2" lift kit is currently unavailable as we tweak the rear spacer design and height sensor extensions.

I'll be getting the lift kit later this year (fingers very tightly crossed)!!
And Paul, my alternator is still waiting on parts from Germany, about 1 month until they will arrive. I'll rip your one off and send it via my auto leccy uncle in Nowra for some TLC prior to sending it back to you mate!

Cool, I think you need it... and the RAI ;)

Thanks Keithy, no rush mate... when you can is fine.

It's the $1,000,000 question at the moment :)
PaulP38a
6th February 2011, 10:43 PM
not $1,000,000... we are aiming for sub-$500, including head and air-box connector piping. Up to customers to supply their own Sikaflex to seal the air-box or we could probably supply at cost... just adds weight to the shipment.
The second RAI is still in test with another member of this forum.
Andy is back from the NT mid-this week and will be getting more RAI's made up taking Captain's feedback in to account for the "final" model.
Then we make up the fitting templates and write the instructions. Shipping is going to be a pain though... too big for Aust Post, so it will have to be pickup or via courier.
End of the month looks promising... gods willing and the rivers don't rise ;)
BTW: this is supposed to be a Muddies thread.... FWIW I'm planning to put BFG KM2's on one of the P38's when I can afford it, might even drop down to 32" to avoid scrubbing altogether.
Cheers, Paul.

Put me at the top of the list paul! I didn't mind your RAI in the flesh - actually does not stick out like dogs bollocks as I first thought, however, if your making a pretty one i'll take it!
As for the KM2's! I say do it! I would have gone 265/75's but not keen to trim guards as yet... Mine measure in at 30.3" according to the BF Goodrich site, and the front mudflaps are feeling it! But on the tar - oh my god! I had a wet emergency stop with 5ppl in the car the other day and they pulled up on a dime! Great impressions so far!
Cheers

What do you guys think of these for off road only use? THe price is sensational and the tread pattern is very much like a simex centipede... they are remoulds, but so were the mongrels that quite a few people swore by not so long ago.
I am lucky enough to have an extra set of rims for dirty weekends, soi I am thinking why not give 'em a bash?
