Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a starter battery for a 99 TD5. Mine's on the way out & dont want to be caught out & have to buy one on the spot. Any recommendations on brand, price guide would be helpful. Someone mentioned a price around the $200+ mark, is this correct?
Thanks,
Dave.

Delkor 31-900 is a direct replacement, I have seen 6 to 7 years life from this brand often. IMO they are equal to the Delphi original one.

Easily $200+ for one of these, IIRC RRP is closer to $270, but can get for less if you shop around I guess.

Hi Dave

I have a CAT starting/deep cycle 175-4370. See Caterpillar Batteries for Demanding Environments (http://australia.cat.com/parts/batteries)

They're around $173 + GST from William Adams in Clayton.

Cheers

My votes for the CAT as well... Excellent value and great battery.

While doing a bit of searching, stumbled across this website on who makes what battery, may be of interest.

I have one of those as well - although I don't think they sell them for $173 anymore!

Yeah, you were right Franz, they are $144+ now!! I went to buy the CAT at William Adams but they have the screw type terminals & I couldnt have been bothered chasing around adaptors or changing my terminals over. They then recommended the 9X-3404 but this was about the $200 mark. So I went with plan B, the Delcor 31-900 & it turns out the place where I bought the battery (R & J Batteries in Hallam) supplies our work with batteries so I ended up getting it for trade price:p for a fraction cheaper than the CAT!!
Thanks guys for your input.

Dave.

Good to hear. Maybe I should have mentioned that the Cat screw on terminal pack is less than $5 for the two terminal caps. ;)

This pack enables the use of the existing cables (OEM)? and is it a CAT product I can get with the battery?

thx

I used the screw on terminals but they are too tall for the negative side and the battery cover no longer closes. Just haven't had the inclination to change the negative lead for one with an eyelet. They are not the ideal solution in my book.

I thought there would have been an adaptor pack but my car need to be jump started to get there so I didn't want to run the risk of stopping & starting looking for the terminals. I even asked the guys there if they had anything & they weren't sure. When they suggested another type of battery saying this "should" be ok, I sort of lost confidence & wanted out of there!! No one had mentioned this battery in the other posts so I just wanted peace of mind on the recommendations.

Yes and here are some pictures of part number 4C-5637. Each battery I have bought I have been asked if I want them.

Yes they are slightly higher than other batteries however I have found that by securing the battery cover by the front screw in clip and then by the rear clips tha cover will sit in place. Yes it does have a bulge over the negative terminal but personally I am happy to live with that as I have had a good run with these batteries.

Not sure why they did not know of the screw on adaptor pack. However you ended up with a battery you are happy with and the vehicle is on the road. Good it sorted out for you.
