View Full Version : Land Rover for construction site work??

I had a funny experience today I thought I'd share for a chuckle. I'm relatively new to the Landy world, having just bought my first LR Series 2A a bit before Christmas, so forgive me if it was just plain stupid.
I was working at a construction site today and had the S2A parked in the carpark "off-site". I had to pick up some equipment from a building "on-site" so was given a orange flashing light to put on the roof. I assured my colleagues it'd be fine because my Landy even has the required 12VDC outlets wired in ... after market of course;). So I headed out to the carpark and plonked the light on the roof ... and it didn't "stick". The magnetic base doesn't work with the aluminium roof panel ... or any other panel for that matter:D.
The solution?

Can you see it?
Maybe a better shot?

Got a few funny looks driving onto site ... at least I think I got some funny looks because I couldn't really see ... I had this flashing light in my eyes!!!:p The only place it would stay reasonably "stuck" was inside the bonnet mounted spare wheel.

Holds a piece of steel sheet up under the roof whilst someone places the beacon. Hardtops generally don't have roof trim. This should work.

Or weld another plate next to the antenna mount.

Perhaps you can ask them to purchase a suction cup one just for you;):D
or as Brian has stated a piece of steel under the roof should do it:)
OH and nice series.

Hi,
had similar problems with a puck GPS. ended up making a plastic box on the top of the ute headboard. could have put it on the bonnet I suppose, that feels like steel.
cheers

Classic.
However does not meet compliance for positioning of rotating amber beacons. Must be visible from all sides of the vehicle. Wonder they let you in.
As said if you are going to be doing so regularly get a suction cup version or a roof bar with mount.

Very nice truck Jaybo.
Pity it isn't a D2...you could get these made into a warning light for the roof....

.....you still wouldn't be seen that well....but your swearing would be heard before you entered the construction site  and the boys would be.."Ay up lads, I hear Jaybo coming.." :D

Very nice looking Landie.
Would love it if we had something like that as work vehicles where I am at the moment, instead of the plastic jap rubbish that we have now that is constantly shedding bits along the roadside.
One of my bosses is ex-army, and he would also love to see the company buying Landrovers as site vehicles.
One of the trucking contractors we have on site has a white Defender Tdi as their site vehicle. Definitely the best looking (and most reliable) work vehicle on site. :D

Thanks for all the compliments on the truck:). It is a nice looking rig but I can't take too much credit:wasntme: - only the paint and improvement of the bullbar and spotlights. It was obviously a previous owner's (as well as the current owner's) pride and joy.
I don't normally take the truck on site - it was a very unusual circumstance so no need for an alternative arrangement. If anyone were to have made a fuss I would simply have grabbed any one of a number of work vehicles or got someone else to do the pickup. (As a Project Manager I'm a bit "hands on";)). It's just more fun in the Landy:D.

Any idea where the side steps were made? I'm looking for soething similar for myLWB series 3. Where are they attached onto th chassis? Or better stil any chance of some close up photos so I can try and find/make/have made something similar? And are they folding or fixed?
Nice looking rig by the way.

The side steps were on the truck when I bought it so I can't tell you too much about where they came from. The front is welded to the outrigger while the rear has a bracket and is bolted. They are fixed - no folding action. The aluminium checker-plate tread section is screwed onto the steel step frame.
If cyclone Bianca treats me nicely and I don't have lot's of repair work to do around the property I'll take some photo's for you tomorrow. They look fairly simple so shouldn't be too much trouble to make. The only thing that might be tricky is the fact that it has quite tight bends in square section, so the sidewalls "collapse" in, creating a nice cranny for water to gather and maybe be a rust trap in future. I intend to sand blast, etch prime and re-paint with chassis black to protect it as best I can while it still looks pretty solid.
Cheers

I've put some photo's of the side-steps up and some detail of the construction and mounting in my thread in the Series 2 section.
