View Full Version : TD5, what should I see if my thermostat is stuck closed?

As the title suggests I think my thermostat is stuck closed.

I have over the years spent a lot of quality time with my cooling system but have never replaced the thermostat. Could it be about time? Is there a way to test it without removal?

Anyone know of a spare parts supplier around gosford that would have one?

Regards.

I shall share the symptoms shortly but don't want to confuse the question.
I have also researched all threads containing "TD5 thermostat" in case anyone is wondering.

Hi eckolsim
if in doubt change it for peace of mind, and if symptom still there it rules it out.
I generally change them every 100,000 kms as with all cooling system hoses.

what you'll see is the temp gauge swing over into the hot zone followed very very closely by your wallet and then in an even shorter time interval your signifigant other complaining about the amount of money your about to spend because you didnt change a sub $300 part of the cooling system at the last prescribed service interval that required work on the cooling system.

Symptoms:

Running fine, load up engine (hill etc)...

Temp guage shoots to the top and engine "jibbs" or surges...

You lift throttle..

Gauge drops back towards normal and surge stops..

Vehicle feels normal

Resume acceleration... (if still under load go back to start of blue text)

Check your top radiator hose too, if its running continually warm (needle still wont show movement) you can be ballooning the top hose which will fail with entertaining :( consequences

Thanks Tombie, you hit it on the head. Thermostat already on order but camping trip to Barrington Tops now on hold.

Still need to nurse the car home.

Tombie,

It looks like these symptoms are also consistent with installing the thermostat with the outputs crossed.

I have replaced the thermostat and tested the car, all is good. However I did notice on removal that the unit was installed rotated (outlet to pump hooked up to top hose and vice versa). I must have been driving it like this for at least 12 months?

So much for LR having a bad reliability rating, if it can put up with my incompetence and still survive then they must be tough!
