Get yourself a note book or clipboard for each vehicle, and a bottle of rum, and write down as much detail about them as you can. Take a swig of rum. Look for all the numbers (eg engine numbers etc) and write them down. Take a swig or two. got a digital camera? Good, now take a good long swig and go and buy another few bottles, it's going to be a long ride...:D

Take heaps of photos of everything you can, and make a folder on your computer for each vehicle.
All this information will help you down the track when you are looking at two gearboxes (for example) and are scratching your head wondering which one it came from!
And just give it a go! have plenty of fun and post plenty of photos!

Mrs hh:angel: Come on now Mrs HH you have enough on your plate. Can somebody educate a student here, mention was made that one of them is a Series 11a, on looking at the piccies, the one in the forground looks like a Series 11 and the one in the background looks like a Series 1? Is that correct????

have serial numbers
57660398
177600739

went to fourfold.org to identify vehicles and despite one being a 8-digit, & one being a 9-digit, fourfold say both are 1955 series 1...

happy to hear of other sites/info to assist vehicle identification.

Hi Ausfree,

sorry to confuse you, we have a Series IIa (according to fourfold.og data), as well as 2 x series I.
I took the battery out of the SeriesIIa and put it in one of the series Is to see if I could make it sing (or clear it's throat, or something...)

G'day Nostromo :)

Two very nice purchases, both appear to be 80 inch models, post 1950,the first one (brown) is a 50/51(in May 50 headlights 7" through grille,parkers/sidelights on firewall,May 51 sidelights moved to guards) model with the headhights surrounded by the grille is quite rare now, and also the first model to have the parkers in the guards and exterior door handles51/52,the other one(green) is later, as it has the classic series 1/2/2a grille, they should both have sloping rear of door edges, but, if one has square rear edges then it is an 86 inch model, the original early motor was a 1595cc unit which was replaced in August 51by a 1997cc unit(2 litre siamese bore) both motors being side/overhead valve configeration, post Oct 1953 the motor was improved with the 2ltre "spread-bore" which stayed in production until the 2.25 ltre OHV of 1958/9 series 2 models.

Hope that is of help to you

That 177600739 reads as a 1955 engine no for a RHD CKD vehicle with a spread bore 2 ltre motor

G'day Nostromo :)

I have re-read my Master parts book and there are indeed 2 sets of chassis number sequences for 1955 model with the commencing numbers as follows: 57660001 eight digit number, and 177600001 nine digit number.

So your green one is 397th RHD Export CKD in the 8 digit range

and

Your brown one is the 738th RHD Export CKD in the 9 digit range fitted with body No 109

I have no dates for the sequence change

source: master parts book-- TP155c June 1956

Both vehicles were CKD units

Aah! so they still have their original capacity motors, 2 litre side valve exhaust and overhead valve intake IOE, :) they should be "spread bore' for that model possibly with engine numbers in the 1706****** series for RHD vehicles 1955 and 56-57 models.

From memory, the "Spreadbore" motor has the sparkplugs evenly spaced along the head, the "Siamese Bore", has them grouped as 2 towards the front and 2 towards the rear with a larger space between them in the middle, I have no longer got my early 80/86 book it grew legs a few years ago along with other reference books :(

Wrinklearthur may be able to confirm that.

                                                                                         cheers

Yes UncleHo, both engines are side valve with exhaust valves in the block and the inlet valves in the head with the spark plugs evenly spaced along the head.
Car 177600739 has engine number 170605297.
The other car's engine number has degraded so I cannot read it.

How can we find the unknown engine number when we have the car number?
...assuming both vehicle and engine are original since assembled...
UncleHo
30th January 2011, 10:17 PM
G'day Nostromo :)

There is a possability that that 57660398 may have an engine in the 57100001+ range as that was early 55 and possibly very late 54 manufacture (55model)post August/Sept as that range is only listed as 1955 model by the master parts book on engine and clutch assys
and seeing that 0398 is very early in the vehicle run that is a chance.

Hope that is of help

To look for the engine number, it's on the front top Left Hand Side of the engine, ( your RHS when standing in front of the Landy ), its stamped on it's side vertically at the front of the machined face for the exhaust manifold.
If the numbers are badly rusted and hard to see, dab a little battery acid on that spot and leave for fifteen minutes or so and then wash the acid off with plenty of water with a table spoon of laundry washing powder in it to neutralise the acid.
