D3 RELIABILITY

We bought a Disco 3 TDV6 in 2005 and have done 255000 ks with mostly on road ks and have only spent $800 on repairing wastegate valve. Awesome vehicle compared to our Disco 2 TD5 which has had a considerable amount of dollars spent on it for similar Ks.

Consider yourself lucky! My D3 has been off the road - not off road - the most out of about 10 new vehicles I've had. I really think this says a lot about them... even though mine has been in the dealers for about 8 weeks in the 4 years of ownership, I still love it! :cool:

I've had mine for a little over twelve months - 25K or so since I've owned it (92 K when I bought it) - and it starts first thing every day - runs very smoothly and does everything I've asked of it - I never get any fault messages - maybe I'm lucky or it's the way I treat it - but the end result is a big smile on my face. I love my D3 !!!

Regardless of any faults or issues, still the best car I've ever owned by a country mile.

Worst for me has been a rear suspension failure but the car was still driveable and with some help from rmp's pillowtracks managed to get back down a easy/medium track.

From memory it was a fairly simple fix - although at the time it it looked very worrying.
The trip down the hill was nerve racking and I was only following you!!

Yep, fix wasn't that difficult. More difficult to find than fix I believe. Was an air pipe that had worn through after it had worked loose from a bracket.

Remind me to jack mine up tomorrow and check those pesky air pipes !!!!! :eek: - good excuse to try out my "new" 4 ton axle stands that I bought at "Autobarn" a few days ago... $79 for a pair.

Pipe was located somewhere near the passengers footwell. Needed a few panels removed to find it from memory.

Had mine 18 months, 20000k = 0 problems except flat tyres.
A lot better than the Pathfinder. The Terracan had a 4WD failure once after 2 years but the difference in the drive between the Pathie/Terry & D3?
Like the difference between Rock & Rap, all got their message but only 1 is really worth listening to.

I want to see a spreadsheet of all the issues. That way I can filter all the crap faults that wouldn't stop me buying a car.

JD Powers and all these other stat related surveys are victims, intentionally or otherwise, of their own rules. They must report everything...broken bulbs, loose light fittings, a run of bad rubber in the key fob....owner's testimonials...same owners that are ****ed off with their broken lights...;)

I'm all up for facts that need to be considered....I want to be well informed when I buy something, anything...especially when it's so expensive. If it has serious issues, well obviously I won't buy it.

Look at the reader comments:

Lexus....I've driven quite a few of the SUV's....underwhelmed and it's a Toyota...now they are having serious issues.

Defender...sorry folks...tough as an office block but haven't they had a shed load of issues through the years...or is that just stats?

BMW.....do some reading....

Jeep...geez....

Skoda....no idea...

Kia....geez....next question.....LOL!!!

About two years ago maybe, I read this site called LR Hell....lots of bad stuff....but when I sifted through the concerns, it was mainly about crap service in foreign countries and a few cars having issues....out of how many sold? I can understand that the owners were ****ed off.....but geez, think about the rest of us that are trying to make informed and expensive decisions before going on a crusade over your car!

Put together a spreadsheet of all the issues you've read about, serious issues, ones that would stop you buying the car....how many of these vehicles are on the road?...need to consider that too.

If you're worried by the outcome of that exercise....make lots of noise, don't buy the car....oh and BTW, send the spreadsheet to me, so I won't make the 'same mistake again'. So I'm saying make lots of noise about a lot of serious issues. If you have a rare concern with your truck, is it right to make out the whole range is flawed?

I know mates that have travelled all around the country in D3s....they've had issues but would buy another no questions asked. My D4, 16 months old, a few '**** me off' type light fittings and a 5% failure on a compressor. All fixed 14 months ago. Since then nothing....touch wood! :)

I just saw a thread on a D4 blowing smoke...that's the sort of issues people need to read....not JD Powers crap!

There will be issues, always will and if they are serious, it needs to be addressed but would you like to miss out on a great car due to stats? I'd be driving....well, actually I'm not sure what I'd be driving cause they all have issues but I'd be missing out on one phenominal machine.... :D

Brought a Nissan 720 4WD 25 years ago because blokes I know had a good run out of them and I saved around $3,000.00 all up including trade in, on buying a Hilux. Considering the buy price for the Nissan at the time was $15,000.00, it was a fair savings.
Anyway, I had the Nissan 12 months / 25,000Klm's before I sold it. In that time, I had a new transfer box, clutch & diff. Meanwhile, my mates still had no problems.
My D4 has now clocked over 43K and apart from some minor glitches, has been problem free.
As others have mentioned, once you are behind the wheel, the minor problems seem to soon be forgotten.
