View Full Version : How to prepare a spare/new ECU - D2A TD5?

Guys (and gals)

I have been doing some work on a mates 2004 D2A TD5 auto whilst he and his wife are overseas. Part of this work included a flash/tune of the ecu. During this I had some issues rendering it unworkable, which I am currently trying to resolve. My problem is that I am not confident a solution will materialise before COB tomorrow, Friday. I need to have the car up and running on Sunday morning when his wife comes home, and needs the car.

My fallback plan is to take the ecu from my 2003 D2A TD5 auto and install it in her car for a week before she takes off again. During that week, I hope to have a replacement ecu and will reverse the process whilst she is away. My car/ecu has several tunes from different compaines tied to the ecu to run the vnt and I wish to retain these.

I have a nanocom.

Questions:

1. What information from my ecu do I need to retain, apart from the tune?

2. How do I prepare my ecu for use in HER car? Im happy for it to run a completely stock tune for the week.

3. How do I then prepare my ecu for return to my car?

Thanks in advance (and sincerely hoping I wont actually need to put your advice into practise).

You should only need to put in her injector codes, once your ECU learns them, it's only a matter of swapping the ECUs over from then on, the tune and everythings remains, she might get a shock when she puts the foot down if you leave your upgraded tune:eek: maybe tell her to go easy on the throttle until she gets used to it:burnrubber::lol2:

So, i read the settings, including injector code, then write them back to the ecu?

I am sure you will also have to tell the ECU to "learn the security code" as well as the injector codes. Remeber to get the codes from your mates ECU as the Nanocom cant learn the codes directly from the motor/injectors.

When I prepared my spare ECU I had to input my injector codes and "learn security codes" Now it just plugs in or out and I away I go.

OK....but I cannot get the injector codes using his ECU, because it is cactus.
Will have a play today and hopefully will not have two dead ecus.

Then I believe you have to take the rocker cover off and take the numbers off each injector.

In the electronic section on this forum there is are some threads on doing this with the nanacom.

(If I'm wron please someone correct me)

Hamish, try it with your injector codes, they will work, I had injector codes off another TD5 on mine and it ran fine, if it doesn't do as scott-oz says.

Strangy has it, I forgot about the security codes.

Thanks all. On listening to lots of advice, some here, and some by the phone, I did proceed without doing the injector codes. It only needs to run around town for a week, so it will be fine.

and it starts.....and I learnt something about my nanocom.

Thanks to all posters, but particularly to Kelvin and Mike. I dont have to face down my mates missus and say "ah.....it wont start...sorry?"

Hi all, One point that may be of use, I had a friends D2 TD5 Auto to look at a couple of weeks ago, and he complained it was slugish and heavy on fuel,
I already had a tune from another auto with was smooth, but standard, I decided to write the tune with my Nanocom EVO ( fantastic bit of kit ) ,

now I know i made an error in the writing process, as I turned the ign off when I should have turned it on ,( the nanocom says TURN OF THE IGNITION ON ) and I turned the key without reading properley!

but it seamed ok till it was about to start writing, then it gave me a communications error, after that the ecu was dead, the M ans S lights for the auto were on and it would not start,

After much messing about I entered the ecu by going through the defender menu and write tune to ecu this it did fine and started no problem phewwwwwwwww.

Hope this helps,

Ps if anyone has a STG1 tune for a disco I would appreciate it, I have stg 1 and a full race tune for DEF in exchange
