has anyone thought about running a Isuzu truck auto box, I think some of the NPR's have them.

Hi Lamby,
yes, and after talking to a tech that used to work on them extensively, read EXTENSIVELY, they weren't very reliable:(, also weren't behind 4BD1's only the later 4 cyls, 4HE1 etc etc I believe.
I had a heretic thought the other day, a Totota 12HT and 4 spd auto ex HJ61/2 would be a good 110 powerplant....:)

This would be the only toy set up worthy of inseting into a rover prob the bet engin&box toyota has ever made.

This has been discussed before...
I am pretty sure the US 4BD1s often had autos. Seems they were an AISIN (same manufacturer as toyota autos).
The 6 cylinders came with Allison autos.
The Isuzudieselswapper website has kits to adapt 4BD1s to a range of GM autos.

Thats true Ben, but it was the Aisin boxes that gave trouble he was telling me.

There are two different types.
1. The 4BD1T's and 4BD2T's in the US used a Jatco JR403 box.
2. The 4H series used an Aisin AW450 box which is a very close relation to the 80 series toyota automatic (Aisin A440F).
The Jatco's seem quite tough for those who look after them. One of the 4btswaps.com members in Alaska is running 20psi boost on his 4BD2T still in the NPR and the box is holding up fine.
Another member on 4btswaps.com and iH8MUD has split the Isuzu Aisin box and the Toyota Aisin box to make a 4wd auto which bolts to his 4HE1. Intended to go into a 60 series, his work is immaculate but the starter position is currently giving him headaches. With LHD the starter conflicts with the accelerator pedal. RHD we could just build a box around the starter and forget about it.

About 5 years ago I came across a very customised Holden HZ One Tonner for sale. Wheelbase extended 30", cab stretched 18" to provide more leg room and a behind the seats storage area, 4BD1T and Allison auto, beefed up Ford 9", 400 litres of fuel. An absolutely smick vehicle displaying a high standard of design and craftmanship. All properly engineer approved with the appropriate mod. plates.
Unfortunately the owner was one of those guys who can't accept that you never get your money back on restorations or projects and wanted a very, very high price for his little truck. They confuse the cost of their hobby with value adding. The usual story, "I have spent $****** building this and intend to get my money back."
Edit- 'phoned him yesterday. He still has the vehicle and it is not for sale unless he "is offered my price". I got a rant about the lack of genuine buyers, and a surplus of time wasters, tyre kickers, "brokes and spivs" who wanted to "steal" it for a pittance. His idea of a pittance is obviously not that of the enquirers he attracted.
