Have been trolling the net for weeks trying to find info on putting an Ls1 into my 110. The info I'm after is what gearbox and transfer was used if not the factory stuff, and how it was mated to the motor if it was factory or otherwise. I'm after a manual. If any one has done this, or seen it done could you point me in the right direction.
I know this is a touchy subect for some, I have read though enough forums in the last week to see that, so opinions are expected but useful information would be appreciated greatly.

Cheers

Have a read of this, i used a GQ patrol 5 speed and a lt230, seems to all go together well enough, tho i havnt got it rolling yet.

Very nice cal, just finnished reading the whole thing.
So its nice to know you think the rover transfer is strong enough. I am going to quiz an engineer to see if I can get a new output shaft made for the t56 gearbox. If I get a nod will check on price for making a batch. Was starting to think I was going to have to change the rear diff as well or use an aftermarket transfer, but then all the stuff i could find was set up for cruisers.

Cheers

i would love to have gone the t56, im still keeping an eye out for a dead one to play with, let me know if you have any luck with mating it up to the LT230 :)

Yes thats what i am thinking, getting a dead t56 and dead r380 box/ transfer. Maybe if I dim the lights and put on some mood music they will "hybridise" themselves.
Searching on the net, the t56 to transfer seem to be the holy grail that heaps of blokes are after. They dont even offer it in the chev range.
Have seen a couple of pics that a guy did himself. The problem seems to be the extension housin on the regular t56 houses the reverse gear, unless you want to pay for the corvette box which is different, and would be alot easier to convert.
Time to call in for some favours for some dead gearboxes.

Cheers, Jonesy

Vt commadore secured with Ls1 and t56 6 speed gearbox. Now all i have to do is clear another 2 datsuns out of the shed to fit it in.
What am I doing?:eek2:

Apparently these guys do a t56 to lt230 conversion:

Hmmm i believe they only do a TKO 5 speed to LT230 not a t56.... went down that path a while back...

It looks like they have a "remote" input shaft with a flange that might be suitable. How well is the transfer on the 110's mounted? do you think a stand alone transfer is a good idea? It should only be a couple of inches between the front of the transfer and back of the t56 if i get a similar flange arrangement for the out put of the gearbox.

With the lt230, its mounted on one side the chassis then attached to the gearbox which as the mount for the otherside. With length of the t56 and shaft, Moving the transfer case back that would be an issue i think. At the moment mine is very close to needing the rear floor pan modified.

Look at the back of the transfer in this pic, it has no hand brake on it either. there was a cross remember but we moved it back and made new floor pan mounts, heres the original which yours would no doubt have -

keeping in mind that you need space to get your hand brake drum on and off and room for the uni and flange you would start running out of room pretty quick if it went back much further, i think mine is back around 4-5in from standard.

Cal, You have your engine hard up against the fire wall at the back don't you. How much room do you have between the front of the motor and the Radiator? Is there much room for forward movement?

It is easy to convert the LT230 t-case to a divorced setup if you have the room:

Mine has a reasonable gap between the back of the heads and the firewall, its in a good spot really. I could imagine you would be able to move it forward that much without modifiying how the radiator sits and maybe notching the front cross member. I cant find any good shots showing how close it is but here are a few without the thermo's in there...

Thanks for the pics boys. Looks like i have some measuring to do.
Cal, the ls1 looks like it sits so low in comparison to the tdi when looking at the side view. It looks like it sits lower than the radiator, which is a good thing.

nice PDF :)
But is the commodore T56 the same as a camaro? Looking around there are alot of variants with different bellhousings, ratios, shifter positions, rear extension housings etc etc

Yes the motor sits low, i tried to get it in roughly the same spot as the old rover motor i also wanted to get it low enough to run the high mount alternator and some extra room if i change the intake setup or add a super charger in future :)
