Took the defender in for a general service the other day and when I got her back the mechanic commented if it had always had that whine. Didn't pay much attention as they're noisy to start off with but this was a different noise, seem to be when the turbo kicked in it was screeching. Took it back to the mechanic that did the service this morning.
I noticed the idler pulley on the air con was wobbly so was certain that must have been the culprit. They replaced it and still making the same noise. Advised me to take it to a turbo specialist to check it.
I noticed the other day after the service the air cleaner drum didn't seem to be very secure. I redid the clips up but was still a bit loose but figured that's how it was.
Just before they closed the bonnet today, the mechanic started playing around with the air filter drum. He was playing around with it and obviously there must be some clips or a seat it has to be locked into from underneath. Did the clips up and it was solid as a rock. Got in the car and drove home and was good as gold! Was the bloody air cleaner vibrating all along
