Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience/thoughts on the Michelin LTX AT/2 in 265/60R18 which are slightly wider than my current Wranglers(255/60R18). I was sold on the ContiCrossContact AT (255/60R18) but was offered these tyres as an alternative. I can get hold of them for $395 fitted which is cheaper than the Conti AT. Also, is there any issue with keeping the current spare which has never been used. My thoughts are this is not ideal but if it isn't a problem then that's $400+ in my pocket. Ive had a search of the site and cant find much info on the Michelins.
Cheers

Hi mate,
I have been running the LTX AT's on my BT50 work utes.
I got over 115000k's out of 1st set & could have easily managed to get another 15000k's as still were not down to wear lugs - I chose to replace them with the same tyres as I tow a tandem builders trailer & I am on job sites most days, I therefore felt more comfortable changing tyres early.
They are a great wearing and tuff little tyre when used in conditions they are designed for. I am sticking with these for my work trucks & touring etc.
Hope this helps

I need a new set of tyres meself !
Those Michelin LTX AT/2 are only $217 USD each from Tirerack
So $880 AUS for 4 plus $400 freight plus $100 fit/balance , so around $1400
So 4 fitted /balanced here at $400 each = $1600 Hmmm Marginal !!
I wonder if 265 x 70 x 18' would worK on my D3 , GG AT2 for $178 each from tirerack .
Seeing my Speedo is about 6% fast on the 255 x 60 x 18 s with 685 RPMILE , then fitting a 265 x 70 with 639 RPMILE
should give a increase of (93.28%) 6.72% plus give 25 mm more clearance (theoretically mind you LOL)

D3Docker,
General rule is to avoid this where ever possible.
If you have to fit the spare and you end up with two tyres of differing diameters on the same axle you will play havoc with the electronic stability and drivetrain as you will have wheels rotating at different speeds and the car will be trying to correct this all the time.
The other problem you have is that these size tyres are not always easy to source so if you somehow stuff one completely and then have to fit the spare and then can not easily find a replacement in the same size you run the risk of having to drive around putting lots of undue strain on your drive train or not using the vehicle until the same sized spare can be sourced.
I think most would agree that if would be better to get 5 the same size then run a different size spare.
Re the Cross Contact AT's I just got two new one from Tempe Tyres in Sydney for well less than $395, closer to $320, but I do not think I will get 115,000 km from them !!!!

D3Docker.I have the conti's on my L322 and they are a fantastic tyre.I'm going to change to the Michilins only because the rocks around Newman are savage, they are cutting chucks out of the lugs on my defenders Bighorns and I want a tougher tyre.If I didn't travel on allot of dirt/rock roads I'd stay with the conti's.Either way you won't loose, both are top shelf tyres way above BFG's,Coopers etc. Pat

Don't forget about the different construction and load ratings of the same brand in its various sizes. The LTX AT2 is available in LT construction in some sizes but only passenger and standard load construction on 265/60-18, which may or may not be a consideration for their proposed use.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Proposed use is about 90% on road 10% off and hopefully a few trips away along the way. Just want the AT for piece of mind when offroad. Will definitely be going for 5 tyres as its not worth finding out the spare is no good when you need it most. The Michelins are local as well but the Contis are 200km away. I probably wont be able to get the 4 wheel alignment done straight away if going local but if I recall correctly then that shouldnt be to much off a problem short term (say a month or so).

Just waiting for 4 Pirelli Scorpion ATRs to come from tirerack.com...should be here next Thursday according to Fed Ex.
AU$1295 delivered = $323.75 a tyre, been quoted $100 to fit all 4...therefore heaps of savings.

Well, I think I might go the way of the michelins. The reports on tirerack seem ok, quiet onroad and ok for general offroad use. The closest quote to the local mob I've been able to get is $560 so the price looks pretty good at $395 and don't have to worry about importing them myself. Haven't been able too find much info about them on the d3 so only time will tell if made the right decision.

Just thought I would give a quick update on the Michelins so far. Have done a few thousand kms of city/highway driving (havent had a chance to use offroad yet) and a bit of towing (6m Ali boat) and the tyres have performed great. The drive is quieter, smoother and the car handles so much better than it did with the worn wranglers. Hopefully can get to try them out offroad soon but with another baby not far away it may not be as soon as I like.

I would just say that the Pirelli's are exceptional. In the dry they stick on roundabouts and I have never felt safer in the wet than on these tyres.
When I lived in the UK I had an Audi A6 TDi Avant and stuck on Michelin Primacy HP's - I reckon these Scorpions are way better.
Very little off-road yet - just effortlessly up the 4wd drive track to O'Reillys - which even in the last year is collapsing rapidly !
Wear is looking good after 2000k - but I may begin a 5000k rotation policy?
We are off this weekend to Dayboro to look for some adventure so I will report back next week... any hidden tracks that way ?
