View Full Version : 4.2 l supercharged in a p38

Hi all,
As usual i dream about more power in the p38..... and at 220k on the clock i only see another 100 before the dream becomes a reality. Then some try to push me towards the new toyo and i express my love for the old p38 with all its faults. The stroked motors from RPI and Triumph Spares come to mind and then searching the web i cam across a secondhand 4.2 supercharged. Has anyone looked at these as a replacement engine or can provide insight into how much trouble i would get myself into:D

no remy......dont even think it. LS2 would be cheaper and easier.
I dont see why a well sorted p38 like yours wont hit the half a mil with the correct servicing.
I know of several still going strong at 400+. One has the origional engine, and the other had a rebuild at 320 (it had noisy lifters).
Also remember.
"you can always pick up a 10 year old top of the line disco for 10K, and a 10 year old top of the line rangie for 20K"
(in other words wait a year or 2 if you want to upgrade)

Thanks Andy maybe i should wait for a later model and yes my engine is fine just wanting more go! I am away for a couple of months soon so timing for an upgrade is perfect. You know the LS2 conversion scares me and i would need someone with more skills than me to take that on!
I hear l322 are coming down maybe some pics :) of the ride.
Cheers,
Remy

Electronics, bellhousings autotrans capacity for extra power (>50% for LS2 over the 4.6), T/F case etc etc.
There was a small firm in the UK which successfully transplanted an LPG converted LS1 into a P38. They somehow kept the original sensors from the 4.6L (GEMS) Rover and adapted them for the LS1 !! However a new bellhousing had to be specially cast and machined.. Regretfully their webpage is now defunct but it did provide a fair bit of good info as to what one is taking on if going down this path:twisted:

Ok, mabe not easier to convert, but easier to get more HP. I have seen rear ended LS1 powered commodores and statesmans go for 2k at the auctions.
Fitting a 4.2 supercharged (assuming you mean the old style rover motor, not the new jag one), or 5L you would have no change from 12k.
LS1 p38s have been done for many years, surely there is more info on them.

Actually meant the new Jag one!
I haven't found much on either LS1 and LS2 conversions accept talk that yes it could be done. There is a kit for bell housing etc but you are looking 3-4K before you drop the engine in. Some talk recently on RRnet but that has died again. Anyway have probably rested the idea for the moment. I think you are right, mine is sorted and i should just wait till a new later model comes along that i think can cope as well as the P38 (and maybe i will get the extra power i want).
Thanks Rem

the 4.2sc of the jags actuly dont tho out that much power,,, id not even contenplate it as there are much simpler motors with way more power to put in,
the 4.2sc is very smooth tho with its power, will deffs be faster but not what you will expect, even in the sports and realy in the tru RR, you expect it to be fast, but its sorta a downer on power:wasntme:,
id deffs be looking at the 6L ls2, parts easy and cheaper to get, and all tuing places no how to make them go and go hard, :D

All these people talking about the p38's getting 300 plus thousand K's from a stock engine is just to much for me to bear.
I haven't seen one in the flesh but they must be out there, mines done nearly 230,000 and over about the last 25-30 thou its just slowly lost power, still has noise but almost can't pull itself let alone my immense bulk.
Mines rather tatty, I just must have got a bad one of it was very mistreated for the first 70 thousand k's of its life as I have pampered it :(

Overfinch in the UK have done a few P38s with Chev V8s, 5.7L and 6.3L, they use GM Auto boxes on both i believe, custom adapter to RR transfer, not sure on axles/CVs though.
I haven't seen anything on how they handle the computer/Becm, i dont know if it is possible, but fooling the Becm by relaying the signal is an idea, remove the connections and just relay the correct signals to the Becm, then as far as it knows nothing has changed. Engine would be controlled with a piggyback/megasquirt etc.
