Hi to all WA aulro
Currently in esperence on my way to perth and need to find/buy a LARGER intercooler to fit my 300tdi series 1 disco, will need to bolt straight in as I am only carring minimum of tools so not able to mod to fit. Thought I was going to fry the arse out of the old girl crossing the nullabor. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Hi rob,
Not sure of a quick resolution here, a full width front mount would help BUT not an easy fit and trying to find one may be a problem. I'd send you one if I had it:(
Maybe some member in WA may have a Allisport or similar to sell?

Is your urrent cooler buggered or does it just need a clean out?
Shame I am not still in Esperance as would have been able to help you at least with tools and a shed.
If you want the bigger unit Ring ASE directly and get them to freight one to you asap

current cooler was cleaned out recently by JC and is still in good condition but not doing the job well enough, was nearly at meltdown for most of the way between border village and balladonia. If someone had offered me $50 for the disco yesterday I reckon I would have sold it

At different time both Pat, on the first days with the heat wave through SA, with the air con off getting upto 107 degrees, normally when towing the van (about 1800kg or there abouts) its in the low 90's, with the EGT's, normally around 350 to 500 but the last couple of days ( yesterday was the worst) the temps were 700-750 degrees, maybe a tad higher at times and was very hard to manage, today every thing was happy again from balladonia to esperance

Thanks dullbird
At this stage I have even taken my driving lights off so I dont want to impede the air flow any more

Call TRS in SA, I got mine from there and is brilliant, compared to standard one anyway.
Travelling on very hot days can be a bit like that, when we travel with kids dogs and trailer, i drop speed to 80-90km/h and drop a gear, temperature on EGT drops immediately, I also get radiator done(Flushed) every year before summer.

Hey Rob, just out of interest, Can you try a smidge less max fuel scew and see what happens? There is a point, that may have been reached, where the fuel input and power output crossover if you like, for want of a better expression. I am saying that at higher loads than what I can replicate by setting up your fuelling, (IE towing fully laden with high ambient temps) it is quite possible that you can reduce your max fuel and gain some power back rather than fit a larger IC to combat the problem. Basically I think you have exceeded the efficiency of heat exchange with a standard IC, and you MAY well notice very little drop in power but big decreases in EGT's , by reducing the overall fuel delivery. (Screw out the max fuel screw 1/8th of a turn)
Give me a call if you like tomorrow, Or I'll try and get you during the day:)

Probably a silly Q, but I assume both your electric fans are working properly. I ask because I had that problem myself on Cape York. Now fixed and the needle never moves.

JC,if you or someone else has tuned the engine in Tassie's cold weather it would be overfueling in our hot dry air here. Pat

I was advised not to turn up the fuel by more than about a quarter of a turn.

Yes, ME:D. It was tuned for 650deg upstream max under load in around 20degrees ambient, but NOT towing heavy loads in higher ambient temps. Thats Why I would try backing it off a little and try it first, 1/8th to 1/4 of a turn is going to help IME.

Thats an arbitrary amount, it totally depends on the timing, turbocharger type, manifolding and intercooler etc.
ANY fuelling changes other than minor movements should be done with a pyrometer, prefferably upstream.

Hi JC
dont ring me at 5 in the morning like my dad did to check on the fires. I will give you a ring when I get to Perth, I will wind the fuel back a bit but I will also fit the new intercooler.
thanks Justin

Hi All
Well the new intercooler is fitted and as JC sugested I have backed the fuel off 1/8 of a turn, now just have to see how the results are when we start towing again in about a fortnight.

Hi all, my 1st post here, I'm a bit of a Landy jube....
Anyway this sounds like a great mod! I just got a 98 300Tdi with 300kkms, she runs well but as I tow a camper and 3T boat on occasions, a better IC may help.
I also think a better tranny cooler is needed, can you fit a bigger P38 cooler as well as the bigger intercooler?
Cheers

Yeah, I'd like some details too. Is it an Allasport intercooler? How much did it cost? Is it difficult to fit?

What to say, I have made a few changes as well as fitting the intercooler. The orignal problem was I was seeing 750 degrees for lenthy periods of time whilts towing close to 2 tonne of van from vic to wa. Also seeing 105 degrees very engine temps. I have since fitting the cooler backed off the max fuel srcew 1/2 a turn (fuel was set for tassie cooler air orignally) and I think I am about the same power now as when I was in tassie with way lower EGT's and should be using less fuel and not turning it into black smoke
