L322 02 transfercase oil, What oil to use?

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help me with what oil to use in the transfercase. L322 02 4.4 vogue. It lists castrol BOT 26 FMB 1. What I can gather this is a europeon number. Does anyone know a equivalent? The Castrol catalog doesn't list anything in Australia.

Hi, just been through this myself. the oil is made under licence to land rover and there is no alternative. the oil was developed between new venture and castrol. I couldnt get any in qld so got some sent up from ritters in melbourne.
$70 litre and you will need one and a bit. its cheaper in the uk but the airlines wont carry it. you can run any good 75w 90 in the diffs though.

I found some good wraps for Mobil Agri Fluid on these and other forums and used it to replace the fluid in the TF case on my MY99. The TF case is definitely quieter as a result. The stuff was developed for h/duty wet clutches in tractors, 4WD TF cases etc but NOT for auto transmissions. Comes in 5L containers...doesn't seem to be readily available, best places to obtain it are produce stores /farm supplies/ Mobil depots etc

I have just been down to the local Land rover dealer. I got talking with the service manager and he gave me some oil. They use Castrol SAF-XO for the transfer case which is the same for the front and rear diffs. I payed $35 dollars a litre but you can get it for $26 a litre from your local Castrol distributor.

Interesting. The workshop manual specifies (for the 2002-2004 models at least). Whether it's appropriate for non-BMW models, I don't know. I don't have a workshop manual for post-2004 models

Use only Castrol BOT 26 FMB 1

Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne has the transfer case lube STC4861 at $30/litre with free delivery. I'm about to buy a litre (all that is required for the TC). I have plenty of 75w/90 API GL5. Castrol SAF-XO is a synthetic 75w/90 API GL5. It's been replaced by Syntrax Long Life 75w-90.

For the price, I'm not going to risk ruining the L322 TC with the wrong lubricant.

When I did al lthe fluids in mine, I used the OEM oils recommended for each - when I changed them, the TC oil is completely different to what was in the diffs - I wouldn't use the same oil as the diffs myself. The viscosity of the TC oil was much thinner IIRC.

A litre of the BOT26FMB1 from the dealer isn't expensive in comparison to a new TC IMO. After all, it only needs changing every 10 or 15 years...

I bought some Carlube 75w-90 for the diffs from my LR suppler and they said everyone uses it.
Then checked on fleabay and bought the castrol syntrax for $30 for 6.
I'll be taking the carlube stuff back and get a credit for it.

That should be OK for the diffs but not the TC.

I'd never heard of Carlube (http://www.carlube.co.uk/) until very recently.

Cheap compared to paint! I just bought a litre of semigloss Taubmans Endure for the front door. $49/litre! (1 litre is the smallest one can buy in a colour of choice.)

I Just checked the lasted updated parts cat from land rover and they still say Castrol BOT 26FMB1 to vin 6A99999 for transfer and the SAF - X0 only for the diffs. FRONT and REAR LESS LOCKING, And Castrol 75W90 for the REAR diff WITH LOCKING

So would hope the Dealer is correct or are going to cover you if it goes pear shaped later.

And For vin 6A000001 on transfers TL7300 Shell- TF0753

That disagrees with RAVE for my 2004 model (quoted above).

Or does it? Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90 (Formerly SAF-XO 75w-90) is a GL5 synthetic.

I rang one of my dealer contacts and was told SAF - X0 can be used in the transfer case, but when asked why Land Rover specs the Castrol Bot oil for transfer they couldn't tell me.
Having said that though, I am still going to put the specified Castrol Bot oil in my own transfer.
