View Full Version : convert 4 bolt diff to 3 bolt.

Hi All
I have my diff ready to fitt. I have the old one out and the new one to go in.
I think my issue is the any I have to put in has the4 bolt output and the one I took out has the three bolt end to go onto the rubber coupling.
I think the one I have to go in was a front diff. I need to put it in the back.
I have tested the axles and they fit well into the new diff.
Eric told me I can just pull the 3 bolt flange off with a Slide hammer (thanks Eric) but I haven't been able to buy one in Port today under $300.
Is this all possible and is there a way without a slide hammer.

Hi Matt,
I assume you have removed the shaft and coupling. If so you should I think be faced with: (this is a D1, but I think its the same)

I then used a large socket and a washer, with a bolt as a puller to pull the central section out:

You can then undo the nut and remove the flange by hand

if you need one as "some d1" is getting a lift shortly and changing the rear shaft to a UJ is on my list of todo I'll bump it up the list and you can have my old shaft and the flange.

that is exactly what I needed.
I am having trouble finding a bolt to go in there though. where did you get that one.
I think it is an M7 thread and my bolt guy can't help.
Said it was a Factory only bolt.

I'm pretty sure its just an M8 thread. I am nearly certain its not M7 as there is no way I would have had one in the garage.

Yep, works great until the friggin' bolt snaps in the thread like mine did ...kin' thing :mad: Thread stops about 5mm from the end of the hole. Have a new one, just haven't got the old one out.
Going to drill mine ALL the way through then tap to 10mm.
New one goes in swimming in Nulon L90....

Piece of cake with a slide hammer. They pop straight out with the shock. Pretty sure it is M8 but I will check later on this morning.

Hi
I have a new flange. other one would not come out even with heat and slide hammer.
but the 3 bolt seems to have a nut on the end holding it on and my 4 bolt had a bolt holding it on.
Can I just reuse the bolt and fat washer on the 3 bolt Rave says 100nm on this.
I recon this would work what do you think?

Well I have it in and running, nice to have my truck back.
this diff is noisier then befor.
Fine under power then when I take my foot off and a rolling then i get the whine noise.
I have replaced the side bearings, there is no play in the pinion bearings so I didn't bother changing them The diff centre was in alot better condition the the one I took out.
Have I set it up wrong?
any clues?
