View Full Version : I don't understand my wife...

Been looking for a new car for SWMBO - she has been riding to work on her Suzuki 800 Boulevard for quite some time after the old dunny door expired, but wants a car as an option. She originally wanted something small, but after almost getting run over several times in my Daughters Pulsar by 4WD's, she says she wants something bigger - Yay! I take her past a LR dealer, and show her a good second hand D2, and even a D3 - which is probably stretching it a bit, but hey - I wanted her to start liking the idea of adding another LR to the garage. She said she wanted a few creature comforts, and liked what she saw with both the D2 & D3 - all good I hear you say - it is, but it took an unexpected 90 degree turn when she saw a Defender sitting out the front - a black SVX 60th Anniversary edition... Not what I had in mind, and not the sort of dollars I was thinking of spending, but I was quite impressed with her attitude none the less. After seeing the price, she was a little disappointed that we probably can't add this to the garage, she has been looking at Defenders ever since, and has decided she wants a black Defender 90.

Needless to say, I am a bit stumped at this decision, but very happy none the less... She now wants to test drive a D2 and the Defender, which may or may not change her mind - she used to like driving my brothers old IIA, so I'll keep you posted, but 1 thing is for sure, and that is it is almost certain we can add another LR to the garage of some description - and I can't complain about that... :)

Cheers - Gav

Fickle creatures those women. Best to nod and go along with it, fortunately in this case you are more than happy to do this :D

Indeed, but the example I posted is still a bit more than I want to spend. I will have to try and find one a few years older if at all possible...

It is nice to have her on the same wavelength though.

What is your budget? Didnt someone say that Land Rover will be doing a special soon with a LE model Defender 90 for $39995?

Homestar
11th February 2011, 07:12 PM
That would almost work - basically told her that I would be happy to put up the sort of money that would buy a new Falcoon or Dunny Door.

You got any more info on the specials? Haven't really been paying attention until now....

Cant remember who posted it, but Land Rover Australia are doing a limited edition on the 90 and the 110. The member who posted it was a salesman at a LR dealership.

Here you go Bacicat

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/120589-defender-2011-new-models-updates.html

Not the limited edition at that price, just the standard D90, the Limited Edition model will be released shortly, no pricing advised yet.

You have until the end of feb to do order one from your local LR dealer at the discounted price.

UncleHo, not sure if you got my last reply from your second PM - the server got busy when I tried to send it. I will be getting SWMBO to take a test drive of a Deefer down here before I can get too serious and start flying anywhere. Hopefully that will be sometime next week with a bit of luck. :)

Cheers.

Thats a good idea. There are very few 90's around so you'll most likely have to travel but best to know she actually likes driving them aswell as looking at them before you jet set around looking for one to buy.

Mate, just be very very careful... :(

I have heard of similar things to this happening, happy wife, happy life etc, suddenly taking "an interest" in what you are doing, liking the things that you suddenly like, offering to get you a drink...

If you ask me, she is just priming you up for something. Its gonna cost you in the long run. At least a diamond, it not more....:o

Just keep your wits about you, and be on the lookout for any other suspect behaviour.

And, should she offer to let you stay home & watch the footy / cricket in peace, while she goes shopping or to her mothers, PANIC...

Surely its possible for her to just like the defender and not have an underlying motif?

This already happens... And I do panic... as it usually means more shoes, handbags and jewelry...

I may have to get her to sign a waiver - No more crap like that if I get her the Defender...

has she driven one yet?

Homestar
13th February 2011, 03:35 PM
No, she hasn't driven one yet, only sat in one, and crawled all over and through it. I have told her not to count her chickens yet, as I also want her to test drive a Disco 2 as well. I'm not sure what she will make of it - I haven't driven one for over 12 years, so not sure what if anything has changed since then, but I don't think she will mind the way they drive. Also, I'm not sure what the 90 is like, as when I last drove one regularly, it was a 130, so not sure how different the short wheel base would be.

Homestar
13th February 2011, 03:38 PM
I will be heading down to the LR dealers tomorrow or Tuesday depending on time, and see what they have as far as a demo model goes. Not sure if anyone would have a 90 as a demonstrator though...

What about a freelander 2? Or are they still out of the allocated budget?

Homestar
13th February 2011, 04:14 PM
She doesn't like the look of the Freelander... She does like the new Range Rover though... She went up to one and asked if that would be beyond our budget...:p. She got quite a shock when she found out the price...:D

What about a older model new shape RR. They are being sold for good prices these days.

Homestar
13th February 2011, 05:29 PM
Yeah, I have thought about that, but I need to do a bit of research about what potential problems may crop up with an older/new shape RR. A mate of mine has one, which he has got extended warranty on, and has had few electrical gremlins start to creep into it. I wouldn't want to spend that much on a second hand vehicle, only to start having expensive problems crop up, but I do love em...

Update - looks like a new defender is off the cards :( the dealers in Vic have run out of the specials, and no one is expecting any more until at least May  and then, at 8K more than what they are on sale for now...:( So, will start looking at second hand I think, but SWMBO will be taking a D2 and a D3 for a spin tomorrow with a bit of luck, so not sure which way the coin will fall at the moment...

The saga continues....

Are there any of the special price models sitting at dealerships elsewhere in the country?

Not that I can find. The special deal is for floor stock that is DELIVERED in Feb. Everyone I have talked to - although that has only been Vic dealers say that there are none left that can be delivered in time, and none of them seemed particulaly interested in asking around. Maybe it's just my face, but car dealers have always treated me like i'm wasting their time, even when I want to spend 40 or 50K. I know that's a long way short of a Rangie, but I would have still thought they might have taken more interest. I'm looking around now for something second hand - either a D2, Deefer, or maybe even and early D3...

On a brighter note, just got back from the tyre place with the RRC now shod in a shiny new set of BFG KM2s! Can't wait until the Greendale weekend to try them out where they belong!
