Has anyone any experience on the new style Goodyear MTR's?
They seem to have a few of the new style in Brisbane in my size 255/55r19
It is more to keep the car legal, also I have enough spare rims to run HT's and the MTR on separate rims

Yep, have a set on my disco. 265/75/16's, cost me $390 each fitted with the Beaurepaires replacement warrenty.
There is only one word that describes them "Awsome". The are quite civilised on road, they arent to loud and off road they grip in mud like nothing else. They perform well in sand with lower pressures (not sure about the lower profile sizes on this one) and they do well on rocks.
I have donw about 20000km on mine and they have plenty of tread left and I have done bugger all off road work with them so its all been around town bitumen work and they are holding up well.
I went hard up a rock step in the disco with these tyres on, not a mark on them. A patrol with BFG's in the same spot sliced both front tyres on the same rock lip. They certainly are tougher.

"Awsome". .
That’s not a bad recommendation
As for the price, they started of at a jaw dropping $708 but I managed to get them down to $545 fitted balanced with old tyre disposal which is not that much more expensive than the ones from the States
If you are looking for these all I can suggest is you call around as even Goodyear Auto care had a $140 price variance and no the best price wasn’t from Goodyear either

I've had them on my D4 now for about 1 month and 3000km. Observations so far:
- Fantastic looking tyre
- Good grip on road for an aggressive tread design
- Good on the sand with low pressures
- Fantastic offroad in all areas (side slops, ruts, mud and rocks)
I'm not too fussed about the noise however which is why I'm looking to sell mine at the moment (anyone interested :) - don't get me wrong they are good for a muddy just a little too noisy for my liking. Mine are in a 265/70/17 btw.

Good tyre but Mickey Thompson MTZs and BFG KM2s are far superior.
MTZs best overall, KM2s wear really fast but offer similar performance.
You can import the MTR Goodyear for $190plus shipping from the US.

I used to agree. The MTZ's are an awsome tyre but from experience they wear quickly also. The tread pattern on the MTR's is more agressive than the MTZ's so the MTZ's would be a better all round tyre as they would be quieter and better handling on road. But seeing as my D1 is alot less civilised than a D4 the noise doesnt bother me that much.

Let's keep it on topic, I am only interested in the goodyears for a few reasons
1. It keeps my car legal, which is very important to me
2. I cannot fit those other brands due to the proximity of my bull bar to the front tyre and the brakes make it hard to fit a smaller rim over them being as big as they are
Plus to buy another 6 alloys does not make it cost effective
So
Its all good so far which is good, I will chase a few more prices, I might even give Goodyear a serve for being the most expensive

Garry I don't think they do the 19" MTR anymore.

I have searched many websites on this subject only to come to the conclusion they list only the popular tyre sizes for the region, if you go to the UK site, only 17's the USA, up to 20's, Germany have the 19's
There is few different sizes listed on ebay.com, granted not the 19's but it shows they make sizes they don’t list on the website
I also have picked up the phone and spoken to Goodyear Australia who tell me they have these in the 19" and that’s the reason they are so expensive, because of the Kevlar
I have done my research and would rather debate the ability of the tyre off road, that’s what I need to know to make an informed decision on if or not to buy these

Lobster and Garry: I think you are both right... sorta
I'm chasing 255/55r19 at the moment too and what I have found is, although the MTR is no longer being made in a 255/55r19 there is still stock around the country. I found Jax had approx 30 spread out over dealerships everywhere, and similarly Beaurepairs had 40 odd around the country.
But, I don't believe it is the new MTR pattern. One of the tyre places I spoke to tried to tell me they could supply the new pattern but when I asked them to triple check they found it was the old pattern.
I'm happy to be corrected though. To be honest I would be more interested in the new pattern. Cheapest price I've found so far is $585 fitted and balanced, but that is just first price over the phone, I haven't started the serious haggling yet.
Hope that helps

I think Pawky's right. As far as I'm aware, the Kevlar version of the MTR is not made in 19", and the non-kevlar version has been phased out in that size. There's still some stock around, but it will be of the non-kevlar variety.
If you've been told otherwise, I'd ask for a pic, or to actually see the tyre to confirm. It would be good news if true!

Well it looks like I was wrong, I called the guy at goodyear again and when I asked him again to confirm the style he made a few calls and then told me its the old style, the worst of it is I asked that from two dealers. I would not have believed two to be wrong
He has however now dropped the price to $540 fitted, so quite a saving
So sorry guys for the wild goose chase, looks like its the old style for me

I know several people who have used the old design and have thought they were a good tyre. I doubt you will be disapointed. The older style arent as agressive in terms of tread pattern so should be quieter on road. The older style are more like the MTZ's as opposed to the Kevlar version and the BFG KM2's.

A UK tyre dealer has reported that the new pattern 255/55-19 MTR will be available there before long. However that doesn't necessarily mean they will have Kevlar sidewalls.

What size tyres? Do they protrude beyond the mudguards/wheel arches? I am interested in how they threw up a rock that smashed your side window.

Well they might not be the Kevlar ones but I managed to get 6 of them for $435 each, thanks to the contribution of another Aulrovian who bought 6 with me
They will be fitted tomorrow and tested on the weekend on Mt Mee with any luck, the third time I have tried to get up there ;)
I will of course post some pics tomorrow once fitted :)

I'm very happy to say I'm the other one who jumped in with Garry to buy the MTRs.
Big thanks to Garry who sniffed out a great deal and is doing all the legwork as I'm about 800kms away. Top bloke. Thanks Garry
Big thanks also to the admins of aulro because Garry and I would never have been able to compare pricing notes without this great site.
Can't wait to get the tyres. Of course I have to wait for the D4 to arrive to actually use them but a trip to the Kimberley in a couple of months will ensure they are well tested.
Thanks again Garry

Just wanted to let you guys know that I have been using the Goodyear
MTR's with Kevlar for about a year now. This is by far the best tire that I have run. I use the 275-65-R18 with the Johnson Rod kit. There are many tires sizes you may not have thought about. I have a tire a tire size chart here: http://johnsonrods.com (http://johnsonrods.com/) that may be of some help if you are considering larger tires.

Oh I actually mis-read this....I though the logistics of getting there...work commitments, etc, had stopped you. I didn't realise the actual track did...LOL!!!
If you are thinking that you'll now make it with the MTRs, I don't like my chances with the OEMs....:(
I've been in that area a few times but only been camping, so all the roads I travelled were easy. I didn't realise that there was tough stuff there too.
Thanks but no thanks....hahaha :)

The kevlars look great! Unfortunately for me I was restricted to the 255 55 19 as the D4 has 19 inch rims
If I could fit 18's I would!

The 18s are too big as Qld only allow +15mm which unless I go to the 255/60r18 keeping it the same diameter and I had the 19" rims in the garage anyway
I dont have the room either with the bull bar that is fitted to mine so it had to be the 19's

Sort of - and pointing out that the 255/60R18 size is quite legal in Qld, as is the 265/60R18. Both of which give you greater sidewall depth, greater choice and cheaper tyres than the 255/55R19 size.

Are you referring to the multiple choices in ATR tyres, of which I am replacing with the MTR's as they did not perform as well as I had hoped?
The only MTR tyres listed and I checked believe me before I went ahead with the 19's were all 2" + oversize. I even contacted most of the manufacturers to confirm as like in a previous post you cannot trust websites
If you are looking at 18's on a D4, if I am not mistaken will only fit the 2.7 Diesel not the 3L or V8? But that is for another thread!
Anyway
I have bought the tyres along with Pawky and if he is as happy as I am he will be delighted
And here are a few pics of the new boots

Yes, the choices I listed earlier are all AT, not MT tyres. Of course, there are a lot of AT choices in 18" that you don't have in 19", but if you really want MT's, then it's either oversize 18's or the Goodyear MTR in 19's.

Nice two wheel tire carrier their Gary. My tire of choice. If you have to go with 19 inch rims then I would suggest the Pirelli Scorpion ATR.

They are the ATR's I am replacing
I have tried them all over and while they might not be bad on gravel roads and in the dry, put them on wet grass or any form of mud they are hopeless.
I near crashed my Disco when towing my camper trailer, it had been raining and we were heading down a mild slope in two ruts (the one the farmer uses in his ute) no rocks just wet dirt and it just lost it. I vowed then to change them for something that would grip better
In saying that I am looking at getting another two as I have two brand new ones that were on the carrier and will use them as road tyres only

I've just picked up this thread, so for what it's worth, I've just returned to Broome from a trip up the Gibb River Rd and various side tracks on 255/55/19 Goodyears on my 2010 RRS 3.0 and they were brilliant in all circumstances. Lots of rock hopping, mud, fast gravel, slow gravel, creek crossings etc, all towing a camper trailer....no complaints, and the one flat we had was a stone in the tread, not the side wall, and it was my fault anyway. Going too fast and didn't slow up enough before hitting that floodway.
Got them last year from Barbagallo in Perth, $495 fitted and balanced.
But I dont know if they're Kevlar sides or not...

An update on the MTR's
They have now done just over the 6k mark and have performed very well and gone every where I wanted so I cant complain
They will be coming off now as I have a set of road tyres, that should quieten it down a bit :D

Hi all
Have just rung goodyear australia to obtain some pricing and information on the 19" tyre options. I was told goodyear are not bringing in any AT or MT tyres to Australia. I like the HSE disco but only option is 19" rims which limits tyre chioce.
Still havent signed any offer to purchase yet but just how bad are the stock tyres. Sorry to hijack the thread.
