hello i am new to this forum and i am wondering the best exhaust system set up for a 200tdi defender?

I have rebuilt the engine with new injectors and new turbo so i am looking to get good sound but at the same time not to loud and annoying, is that possible with the defender???

Cheers

The standard 200tdi exhaust is quite OK, you can remove the centre muffler if you like, but retain the rear resonator.

Best thing you can do is tweak the timing and fuelling, fit a decent intercooler and dial in some more boost...

 It's a 4cyl diesel, good sound and that combination is an oxymoron IMO :D

2.5 normal bend, agree with JC drop the centre muffler and keep the resinator.....mines a little noisy without the resinator

ok fair enough can you here the turbo through your exhaust?

cannot really hear the turbo from the drivers seat but have been told you can from behind, a resinator might help with the turbo noise

turbo whistle i wasn't really chasing, quicker spooling was the main reason

I'd strongly suggest retaining or fitting a resonator on any Tdi system.

I made a 3" system years ago and ran it initially without any noise attenuation at all, and the noise (and resonance) was horrific.

Apparently 2.5" systems don't suffer quite the same, but the cab becomes a resonator if you aren't careful.
The noise from mine nearly did my head in right at 100km/h in 5th, it was actually painful.
Initially I only fitted a resonator at the rear and it made a huge difference.

If the OE 200Tdi is the same exhaust as the 300 system they are a pretty well made and setout system. (and JC has already said they are up to snuff, and he'd know ;) )

The OD is 2,3/8" (60mm) and all the bends are mandrel not press.
The main muffler is also a straight through perforated tube so there is no restriction.
Many take it out and claim an improvement in spool up but I fail to see how, but i've never backed to backed it either.
When I dropped the dump pipe I actually found a massive MIG bead inside, it encroached almost 6mm all round at a pretty critical spot so I ground it out, but in all honesty I'd reckon you'd have to dyno it to feel any improvement, my bum dyno sure didn't notice anything, but I felt better that I'd improved the flow slightly :D

3" is plain overkill and not needed (although I found a useful increase in the rev range through the gears and a significant drop in EGT's)
I'd agree with Weeds, 2.5" would be fine for most engines.

i dropped the centre silencer on my '95 300 TDi kept the OE rear, and noticed an improvment in the pick up especially when off the turbo ;)

Don't limit it to your opinion, it's a basic fact, hell I've even quoted you on that when someone starts on the "mighty 4BD1 note":D.

No comparo... 5, 6, 8 pots or GTFO YouTube - Landcruiser turbo diesel 4x4

As a 200Tdi owner I can't see, or maybe that should hear, why you would want to change the sound. The old girl is loud enough without tweeking the exhaust:wasntme:Anyway good luck with your project. The last few inches of my tailpipe have gotten very thin in the last 12 months but the rest of the system is as solid as a rock

Fortunately I was talked out of changing exhausts, by an exhaust shop no less:eek:. They took me for a spin in another 300 auto they were doing, 3" no mufflers, sounded like a gutless struggling boat. Customer was hell bent on it.

May get away with it on the manuals, but it sounded double:toilet: on an auto.

haha na all your opinions have been a great help. I live in the northern suburbs of Perth and no matter what mod i want to do, or where i go know one knows land rovers especially defenders so its been good to get some experienced opinions for once.

My exhaust is rusted through and has a few holes so i need to replace it. The 2.5" with the rear resonator sounds like the way to go maybe

Unless it's going to cost more, replace it with a standard system. If you've got a 200tDi, then that exhaust has been going strong for at least 19-20 years.....
