View Full Version : The "Leafer's B" inaugural - Darling Dodder classic

Distinguished Colleagues,

A pleasure to report that the inaugural Darling Dodder has been completed, and all played well. Apart from the unfortunate issue with Sam and Pete's Stage 1, :( the rest of the Leafer's B crew remained unscathed - well, nothing a coil wouldn't fix.

There were even reports of Matilda hitting 90km/h on the return home.

Leaving Ipswich mid morning, the true fabric of the leaf spring crowd soon became apparent - at the very first stop, ignoring completely the official trip document guidelines, the entire group took over the front bar of the Rosevale Hotel - let there be cheer! :twobeers:

From here, our intrepid gang journeyed forth to the Aratula environs and beyond. The pre trip talk suggesting possible low range requirements proved to be questionable, as did the coil in my Tailman's '53 80 inch, driven with great flair, may I say, by Welly (and Tim). Once replaced, 053LRV motored like a charm.

Lunch was a much enjoyed moment, and although the skies were less than ideal, the views from the Chair matched the hype. With the mechanicals addressed, Leafer's B descended the track and prepared to bid some participants farewell (thank you Martin and family) :)

A sporting overland dash to Loch Moogerah were made, with camp established in the still blazing sun. The heat was somewhat fierce. However our reward, on dusk, was a champagne camping and cultural experience. Over a moon lit Loch, arguably the club's finest Quasi Existential minds became deeply embroiled in discussion which went to the very core of just who, and more importantly what, we are. The result? A new cult were born, Leafer's B - cheers to that chaps! :BigThumb: Let no man cast aside those who choose to drive Sollihul's finest. Long live Leafer's B! Long live the Black Oval.

Of course, much frivolity abounded to the wee hours, with even some unconfirmed reports of the great Loch Moogerah Monster being sighted. That said, fear not folks - the GCLRO believe in safety first, and I can assure all who may attend future GCLRO/Leafer's B events, that being plied with Muscat is entirely optional.

Thanks for coming along everyone! :D

Thanks for organising a great trip Dan.

We had a good day out, despite a mechanical drama about 15km from home. Here are a few pics we took:

A shot out of the front window as we left the meet point in Ispwich:

First stop at the pub in rosevale. I woud have been happy to end the trip here :D :

Arriving at camp:

We spent about half an hour or so at camp, said our goodbyes and headed off. We went back via Boonah then Beaudesert. At Beaudesert, we had a strange noise from the rear end of the car.

I wasn't exactly sure where it was coming from, it was either diff centre or wheel bearing. (Hoping in a way if anything it was diff as we could at least be sure to get home if it was.

We carried on, and got to Luscombe when it was apparently very unhappy.

I pulled off one of the drive flanges and straight away I knew it was wheel bearing not diff centre, so we were stuck.

No phone reception atall (both Vodafail) either.

We walked to the nearest house, where the owner let us use his phone to call RACQ, who arrived within 15minutes! and took us home!

Ultracare is worth every cent!

Well I think a great time was had by all.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Pete, that's not really the karma you should have got after getting me out of trouble with the spare coil.

Once we got to the campsite and set up we were treated to an absolutely wonderful sunset.

The next day after we all packed up we decided to head up Spicers Gap to the Governor's Chair since we had missed it the day before when we had troubles with a coil in our Series 1 and Caitlin had arrived at the camp late in the day. Glen and Patsy decided to come with us so we had a convoy of four, Gumnut (1953 S1 80"), Clancy (1978 S3 Game), Queen Mary (2008 D3) and Daisy (1963 S2 SWB Ex Mil) towing the bright yellow camper otherwise known as Sunflower.

And then the trip home. Generally smooth except that some idiot (I shall remain nameless) put 16l of diesel into the tank of a petrol S1. It rattled a bit under load but it made it home :).

Thanks Dan for leading us and to everyone else for your company. I still think this is the best of clubs!

Although we didn't camp out, we thoroughly enoyed the day, and the international visitor (my father from Wales), was most impressed! :)

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but I left the camera at home :wasntme: - I will say that being TEC, some of the views over the top of rises in the road (especially at the start of a straight) gave an amazing image of a line of old LR's that you should all be very proud of! :)

Thanks to Dan for leading the trip and taking us on a great drive through the DD!

I'm now very tempted to look for a 1977 series (my birth year ).....

Hi
Thanks for a great day. It was good to meet everybody and put faces to the names.
We had intended to camp but one of our daughters became ill during the day so we thought it better to head for home after Spicers.
Looking forward to the next trip.
