View Full Version : Replacing/lengthening breather lines.

Been reading recent posts regarding breather lines etc.

A quick run down on my efforts.

Renewed from the rear axle/diff. It now terminates in the trim/channel above the passenger side sliding rear window.
Ran the hose up through the corrugated split tubing that holds all the wiring for the rear left, break, indicator etc. Taped it all up. Bob's your uncle!

Was going to do the same for the fuel tank breather, but thought probably not a good idea to have this venting inside the vehicle.
In a stroke of shear luck, adjacent to where my ladder bolts on to the rear cross-member is another hole that lines up with the bottom right upright.
Drilled out the ladder, fitted a couple of gromets here and there. A 4.0mm hole at the top of the ladder upright and I have an extended fuel tank breather.
You'll see where I sleeved the blue air line into the existing breather assembly. This will be a temp setup untill I get feedback. (please comment):) If this will work alright?
Couple of questions now.
What exactly is the filter/check valve on the fuel breather line? Does it have to be mounted verticle? I intend on rerouting/shifting this once I permantly replace existing mounting points.

The hole I drilled in the top of the ladder for a breather. Being at the rear of the vehicle, when travelling do you think it will be under vacum and suck dust in? Is it worth fitting a small filter to the end of the hose?

Had originally planned to run everything to a manifold up the front. But as per a previous post,
Quote "The breather is a restriction when very hot diffs hit chilled water. Eg high country tracks. If cooling rate exceeds flow capacity of the tube then water goes in."
Thanks Mike, Tombie:).
Thought I would try and keep the hose runs as short as possible.

Please comment in any way shape or form. Your advice is appreciated. (Thanks in advance.)
Sorry about the photos'. Still haven't figured out how to include them in the text so they match up with what I'm on about.

Does that make it possible to take in water having it by the window? and it's a vortex more than a vacumn I dont think you have a problem in the rear ladder.

2002 model.

It's above the window, no chance of water. But have already shortened it to the left rear corner where it comes up through the floor.
Was a major overkill where I had it. (Diff breather)

Great description of your project.
Are there just breathers for the two diffs and the gearbox that need to be extended? and if so it seems the rear diff seems to be the lowest.

I have seen kits for this but, they seem pretty pricey for just some plastic tubing.... am I missing something?

Only bothered doing the rear diff and fuel at the rear.

The three up the front, behind the engine were up out of the way enough for me.

There are some good kits around if you want it all ready to go. Or go out and get some 6.0mm pneumatic line and away you go.:D

Cheers,
Tod.
