Popular Hamelin Bay stingray slaughtered in front of screaming kids | Perth Now (http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/how-could-they-do-this-to-stumpy-hamelin-bays-pet-stingray/story-e6frg13u-1226004981256)

Just stumbled across this article on Perth now. Its written in a way that stirs emotion but was a senseless act non the less. Its well known that there are friendly stingrays about the beach there, all this does is give the govt and green groups more ammunition to create more marine sanctuaries and make it harder for the rest of us recreational fisherman (read the comments for examples). Do people just not think before they act??

Right with you Stuee.

Another case load of ammunition for the green groups against rec fishos due to the stupidity of a select minority.
No different to access issues for 4wd'ers etc etc.
Same old story that keeps the majority of people who do the right thing and then some, from doing what they enjoy most.
Unfortunately for us lot, it's those who make the most noise get the gong, and the green groups have it all over us in that department as we tend to sit on our hands and "wait to see what happens" then complain about the outcome.
I've been to a couple of meetings regarding marine parks and catch limits, and let me tell you that the turnout was less than astonishing given the amount of people who fish.
If there's one thing we could learn from the greens, it's how to stand up for what you believe in.

My two cents worth.

The irony of the story is that most probably "stumpy" is stumpy because when stumpy got caught in a pros net as a pup he got tailed.

Not sure how wide spread the practise is these days but east coast trawlers would tail rays in an effort to reduce ongoing barb injuries to the deckies.

Not too many years ago a few dumb victorians decided to catch and kill one of the big groper that reside under the wharf at Cookie - they are a protected species.
The word on the street goes that the offenders tripped and fell heavily in the toilet block at the caravan park... not that I condone vigilanty activity. Marine Parks and protected species wont save the world from dumb people.
